The federal government will beef up Canada’s intelligence-gathering capabilities and "prepare for all contingencies up to and including war" under a new national-security strategy that says protecting sovereignty now requires building "strategic capabilities" in eight sectors from critical minerals to defence and emerging technologies. The Plan for a Stronger Canada, released Thursday, is the first national-security strategy from Ottawa in more than two decades. Only 13 pages long, it’s a framework guiding the development of five new detailed national policies for defence, foreign affairs, economic security, public safety and intelligence. A new foreign policy will be released in about one month with others to follow, the government says. Senior officials at a briefing Thursday said threats facing Canada are increasingly complex, ranging from climate change, terrorism, pandemics to cyberattacks, cutting-edge artificial intelligence and the increasing possibility of a major war. The Globe and Mail is not identifying the officials, who were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter. Officials did not say where specifically war might break out but some European leaders and military commanders have said that by 2029, Russia will have the capacity to attack another North Atlantic Treaty Organization country. theglobeandmail.com/politics…

... Je dirais même plus, tous les gouvernements du Québec fait des rencontres directement avec les premières nations et les Inuits, ce n'est pas exceptionnel ...
Replying to @PaulPlamondon

... long letters and multisyllabic words don't work well on social media, but the memes and editorial cartoons are doing a good job of summarizing PSPP ...
This is so revealing of who the new Premier is at heart and how he intends to be within Canada - will be fascinating to watch how Quebecers react to this.

🇨🇦 HEY AMERICA, HOW’S THAT CANADIAN BLUEBERRY-BOX TARIFF WORKING OUT FOR YOU? Apparently, protecting American farmers now requires protecting them from the tariffs imposed to protect American farmers. Maine grows some of America’s finest wild blueberries. But its farmers rely on specialized Canadian harvesting boxes that work with their existing processing equipment. American alternatives aren’t readily available or would be prohibitively expensive. So Washington imposed a 50% tariff on the Canadian products those farmers need. Now Republican Senator Susan Collins has persuaded the Trump administration to exempt those boxes and several other agricultural supplies from the tariffs, effective October 30. It’s an encouraging correction, but consider what happened. American farmers needed Canadian equipment to produce American food, and their own government made that equipment more expensive in the name of protecting American industry. Canada supplies the boxes. Americans grow the blueberries. Everybody benefits from the arrangement. Here’s a thought: If protecting American agriculture requires exempting American farmers from America’s own tariffs, perhaps the problem wasn’t the Canadian boxes in the first place?

The world dumpling map blew my mind. Tortellini and ravioli can be classified as dumplings?! Feels weird but it does make sense... Born and raised in Bavaria I was very happy to see Semmelknoedel featured! Interactive version here: buff.ly/2P6xNHH

Three down. Three left. The people have spoken. We have had enough of the chaos, the hatred, the corruption, and the authoritarian idiots who think the world belongs to them. Orbán, Bolsonaro and Vučić have all been rejected by voters. Today, Netanyahu could be next. And Trump looks increasingly likely to earn his own big red cross in the midterms. That leaves Putin. The rest of us must make sure Moscow gets its red cross too, by giving Ukraine everything it needs to defeat Russia’s imperial ambitions. The age of «strongmen» is looking a little less strong. And that is a beautiful thing. Remember when you could wake up in the morning without wondering which country was being threatened, which ally had been insulted, or which international crisis had been manufactured overnight by a man with an oversized ego? When politics was often boring, diplomacy happened behind closed doors, and world leaders generally tried to solve problems instead of creating three new ones before breakfast? It wasn’t a perfect world. Far from it. But there was a certain peace in not having to listen to angry old men demanding the world’s attention every single day. Imagine getting that peace back. Imagine a world where the morning news is about progress, discoveries and possibilities, rather than the latest threats, lies and tantrums. We deserve that world again.

Nearly ten years ago, I first approached the David Bowie estate about creating “STAGE”—an immersive, multimedia arena show that would let audiences of up to 17,000 experience one of David’s finest filmed performances in a room full of like-minded fans. It seemed destined to be one of those ideas that arrive and vanish almost in the same breath. But for some reason, this one stayed. DAVID BOWIE “STAGE” will have its world premiere on February 14 at the Uber Arena in Berlin as part of the Berlin Film Festival. What is it? It is not a movie screened in an arena. It is a curated multimedia experience designed specifically for arenas and presented on screens so large they require an arena setting. There is not one screen but several, each with its own image and perspective, inviting the audience to look where they want—more like theatre than cinema. Expect the unexpected. We began our first assembly in 2018 and have been refining the sound and color grading since completing Moonage Daydream in 2021. The sound was designed and mixed by the team that collaborated on Moonage Daydream, led by Academy Award winner Paul Massey and three-time nominee David Giammarco. The sound design was created by Academy Award winners John Warhurst and Nina Hartstone and will be presented in 7.1. The Lighting for the show has been designed by OBE Patrick Woodroffe, who collaborated with the Rolling Stones for decades. The lighting is as much a part of the experience as the sound and will be choreographed and integrated with the film elements in a way we’ve never seen. Hopefully, it will all work together seamlessly. One wonders. I suppose Berlin will be a bit of a high wire act. This show was built for 2027 and would not have been possible without recent technological advances. I am so grateful to the David Bowie Estate for entrusting me with this once in a lifetime opportunity. And am beyond grateful to Tricia Tuttle and her staff at the Berlin film festival for providing us with the most apropos launching pad. And to the Bowie community who have been so supportive throughout this 10 year journey, this one is for you.
