Ambitious UK Start-Ups: Uncovering the DNA of Successful New Businesses For the first time, real data on new businesses and their founders were collected during the 2023 UK @StartUpNational Awards, offering insights into the dynamics of UK #startups. The report, supported by @StarlingBank analyzed responses from over 1,200 founders of UK businesses under three years old, showcasing a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem. 👩‍💼Founder Backgrounds and Experience ⭐️39% of founders had entrepreneurial parents, providing early business exposure. ⭐️41% of start-ups had multiple founders, enhancing success chances through diverse skills. ⭐️40% of founders brought experience from previous business ventures. 📈Inspirational Role Models @StevenBartlett and @BenFrancis1992 emerged as popular entrepreneurial role models among new founders. 🙋‍♀️Women in Start-Ups Women are central to the start-up landscape, are involved in 50% of new firms in various capacities, but face challenges in funding. 🎓Educational Backgrounds 75% of start-up founders hold graduate degrees, higher than the national average, fostering an innovation-driven ecosystem. 💰Support Needs Over half of the start-ups indicated the need for better access to finance, marketing, talent, and new markets. 🌎International Trade and Ambition More than 40% of start-ups are trading internationally, with a similar proportion planning to start exporting within a year. 📉Resilience to Failure Nearly a quarter of founders had previous entrepreneurial failures, primarily due to financial issues. 💻Digital and Financial Adaptation Start-ups are increasingly using digital platforms like LinkedIn and Instagram and opting for challenger banks or fintech firms for finance management. At a time when the UK economy is facing uncertainty, this study demonstrates that we have entrepreneurs who possess many of the characteristics needed to succeed in business while embracing new ways of working.
