I didn't make a pinned thread of this year's stories or anything... But I just made my Rolling Stone debut so the time has come
Trying to capture the immensity of Korean pop music in 100 blurbs is near impossible, but @RollingStone we attempted just that! I wrote about IU, T-ara, Red Velvet, parkjiyoon, Girls’ Generation, VIXX, Pentagon, GFRIEND, NCT 127, Orange Caramel & DJ Doc rollingstone.com/music/music…
Haven’t posted here in over a year but wanted to pop in to remind anyone who is able to and hasn’t gone yet to go vote
So while I was MIA this weekend I missed this site’s owner sharing anitsemitic content & claims (ie jews control finances & have ruined X’s revenue) so I’m gonna head off for the foreseeable future because it just doesn’t feel safe or smart to be active as a visible Jewish person
Reupping this because I have some behind the scene access for some K-pop stars at NYFW and would love to work with some editors (with a budget 😅) on this
Going to be attending some NYFW shows if any editors want to discuss coordinating coverage. I'll especially be focusing on the connection between music and fashion industries.

My @AP Story today

Yesterday, around 200,000 teachers from across South Korea gathered in front of the National Assembly in Seoul dressed in black to commemorate the recent deaths of young teachers and to call for better protection of their rights.
Some South Korean broadcasters host end of year ceremonies rather than award shows (though the industry there is inundated with them too). Still get the performances without having to deal with the drama of awards (mostly). I doubt it’d work here, but I still think about it a lot

I'm so glad you expanded upon this!
I covered KCON via a variety of perspectives for three different outlets, and it left me wondering who is KCON for nowadays? Maybe not legacy acts.

Just started watching the NCT 127 doc… thank you teacher unions for striking so that Mark Lee could pursue this dream

I'm not a new K-pop guy, but I'm not an old one either. Reading this made me feel... old, but also, not old? Must be a good sign.

“If someone formed their understanding of South Korea solely from K-drama and K-pop, then they’d probably think the country is a relatively easy place to live as a woman. However, this is not the case.”
Glad more people are talking about Flowers of Fire
When intl. fans of K-pop / K-drama reached out to journalist @allyjung for more info about the women taking part in unprecedented feminist protests in Korea, she looked for books to recommend. They didn't exist, so she wrote Flowers of Fire. @service95

My K-pop-ish bookclub recently read Flowers of Fire, and it inspired me to write a newsletter inspired by the worst corners of K-pop-ish reddit notesonk.substack.com/p/flow…

In the age of access journalism, someone has to be willing to get messy 🤭
We launched @songmess' The Mess column today, & the first installment is a brilliant take on the state of Pride & a CTA to play more gay music at the gay club.

An enormous shout out to @hoe_doyan and @thatianadiaz_ for the thoughtful edits and trusting me with a space to cause a commotion. Editorial support still exists y'all 🥲
It's the end of August and I can't help but ruminate K-pop's songs of summer... Anyone have any must listens to this summer?
Taking a sick day watching You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah… this is the most relatable and awkward thing ever I love it
