Many congrats to Yu Yuan on passing her PhD with minor corrections today! Her thesis, titled "The Finite Integration Method: Algorithm and its Applications in Solid Mechanics," is a great achievement. Many credits go to Prof. Wen, from whom I took over the role of 1st supervisor.
Computational modelling of composite materials can help us understand composite failure and facilitate the development of resilient composite materials. We recently reviewed the literature and suggested some future directions. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
It was a lovely science weekend! We learned the plants and enjoyed taking microscopic photos of plants, flowers, insects and toys, etc. It was a really nice way to unveil a new "micro-world" for our kids. Thanks Jennifer for organising these fun activities and the photos.
Many thanks @StefanSzynisz for your invitation. I look forward to the talk at Durham University on 14th March. My talk will be about "Bridging Mechanics and Machine Learning in Composite Design and Optimisation". I'm also excited about visiting the beautiful city of Durham.
Today, we were delighted to host Dr. @Mingchao_Liu from the University of Birmingham for an engaging and impressive talk on "Mechanics of Robotic Metamaterials: from morphing to locomotion".
One week left (18th Feb) to apply for 3 PDRAs and 3 PhDs:

Smell the burnt? Wind blades are mostly made from glass fibre composites with a layer of non-conductive polymer coating. To mitigate lightning strikes, there is a strong motivation to develop new electrically conductive coating materials for wind blades. Photo: Rafael Veronezi
How can composite materials be machined without inducing defects? Machining-induced defects are particularly sensitive to high temperatures. This is the first study to reveal the temperature effect on the machining of CFRP, with Dr Dan Sun. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
How to prepare your ERC proposal? I was pleased to share my European Research Council (ERC) grant application story with my colleagues this week - some lessons learned during my application. Hope you will find this video helpful! youtu.be/ip17KJfbxfM
