Driving home from Nashville a few days ago, the wife wanted to stop in Franklin to do a bit of Christmas shopping. Obedient to her wishes as I am, I make the detour and park. As we strolled along the square, I see an older man sitting alone on a bench. Being the sort who initiates conversation with strangers, I say jokingly: “You look like a man who is waiting for his wife while she spends his money.” He gives me a wan smile and replies: “I wish I was.” His voice cracks. “She passed away last November.” We stop. I extend a sympathetic hand. He shakes it and rises to greet us. Lauri asks him about his wife, and he tells us what a wonderful woman she was and of their 50 years of marriage. His eyes welling with tears, he says he comes to the square and sits on that bench daily to reminisce about her because it was their spot for decades. He seems glad to have someone, even strangers, with whom he can talk. We chat a bit longer, exchange numbers, and I ask him if we can pray for him. A believer, he readily accepts the offer. So, right there on the square in Franklin we pray for the Lord’s comforting presence and peace in his loss. We open our eyes and, at that very moment, a woman walks by hurriedly and reaches for the bench behind this fellow. Only I see it, and I think she might be stealing his phone which he had left on the bench when he rose to speak with us. I walk to the bench to investigate and see that she’s left a card, a little plastic dove glued on it, proclaiming the hope of John 3:16. I look up to see her far down the sidewalk, her brisk pace undiminished, placing them everywhere in her own evangelistic endeavor. God bless her for it. Lauri and I wished our new friend well and proceeded to shop. I bought a new vest at her encouragement — “It looks good on you” — and she bought some aromatic candles — “cinnamon vanilla.” But all the while we were thinking of this man and the seemingly coincidental nature of our meeting. The Lord had used us to visibly encourage him. I cannot tell you the number of times I have had such encounters simply because I spoke to a stranger: a taxi driver who told me someone had murdered his daughter; a waitress who cried when I told her she was doing a good job; a contractor who, just last week, revealed to me how the Lord had delivered him from meth addiction when I was sharing the Gospel with him; and a young woman who looked unsettled and I simply asked her what troubled her so. There are people all around you who carry secret burdens, and the Lord puts you in their path for a reason. Do you notice them? Or do you press on to “more important” things? Pray that the Lord gives you eyes to see them and the heart to minister to them. It will do you as much good as you do them.

This week's conversation is a tender one. It's about abortion and the emotional weight so many people carry alone. Early in my TV career, I covered abortion often. But back then it was always about the debate. What I never saw was the quiet part. Recently, I attended a fundraiser in the Hill Country where women and men stood up and shared their stories. Some had held onto grief and unanswered questions for years. I couldn't stop thinking about them long after I left. So today, I'm sharing their stories. Not to judge. Not to debate. Just to listen and to offer hope. Whatever you're carrying, your past doesn't have to define your future. Listen to the @GoodtasteSoul episode HERE. youtube.com/watch?v=qlkMIyIK…

This week's podcast tackles a heavy topic, so please listen with care. This isn't an easy conversation, but after hearing stories recently that truly touched my heart, I felt compelled to explore a side of abortion we don't talk about nearly enough. We're not here to debate whether abortion is right or wrong. We're asking a different question: What happens next? What emotions surface? What questions linger? And what happens when the experience brings unexpected feelings, struggles, or questions that are difficult to share? Whether you’re a woman or a man, abortion may have touched your life—or the life of someone you love—in ways you never expected. Today, we're making space for the stories that often go unheard, the questions people may be afraid to ask, and the experiences that can be difficult to put into words. Most importantly, this conversation is about hope. Because no matter what someone has experienced, help is available, healing is possible, and no one has to walk that journey alone. If you haven't been to The Chef's Table in #Houston, you'll want to add it to your must-do list! This award-winning restaurant, known for its bold South African flavors and creative cuisine, has just opened a second location in River Oaks. I've always had a soft spot for The Chef's Table — the food is exceptional, and executive chef Paul Friedman is a one-of-a-kind talent. His creativity has earned him plenty of accolades, but what has always impressed me most is the man behind the food. Paul has a big heart, an incredible drive and a determination to succeed that's hard to miss. There's a soulful side to him that makes his story just as interesting as his food. I recently spent an afternoon with Paul at his new River Oaks location, tasting some amazing dishes and talking about the journey that brought him here. I think you'll enjoy getting to know this talented chef as much as I did! Ay Chiwawa! That’s the name of this authentic Mexican food discovery in #SanAntonio. Owners Carlos and Kitty Salinas serve up delicious scratch-made specialties, including hearty Albondigas and Pork in Red Sauce. Their Chicken Tortilla Soup is a winner, too. The couple’s love story didn’t exactly begin as a match made in heaven. It definitely wasn’t love at first sight. Since they worked together, they first had to figure out how to get along. But Cupid’s arrow struck—and the rest, as they say, is history. Today, Ay Chiwawa! has two locations—one in Spring Branch and one in San Antonio. There’s something to be said for never giving up, and the beautiful stories behind H-E-B’s Quest for Texas Best prove it! I’ve had the honor of judging this competition for four or five of its 12 years, and the contestants never cease to inspire me. At this week’s finals competition, Marcus and Creda Perryman tied for third place with their fantastic Uncle Marc’s rubs. The rubs are wonderful (I’d buy them in a heartbeat!), but it was Marcus’s story of fighting back that really got me. After losing his job and a bitter breakup, Marcus says he spent a year living in his car, taking showers in a gym. Eventually, he landed a job at Starbucks. He shared what it was like when former coworkers came in for coffee. He could have hidden in the back or ducked into the restroom, but he didn’t. He served them. That took guts. And a big gulp of humility. Hats off to Marcus, his beautiful wife, Creda, and all the talented, hardworking dreamers who took home this year’s coveted prizes. And BTW, @HEB awarded every finalist $5,000! How wonderful is that? We’re pretty blessed here in Texas to be able to say I love “My H-E-B!” Meet all of this year's winners at the link below. newsroom.heb.com/h-e-b-crown…
