The 5,000 figure is just the entire national homicide decline since 2024, with all of it credited to deportations. But murders were already falling in 2023 and 2024, before Trump took office. They're also falling in cities with wildly different politics, policing, and levels of immigration enforcement. If deportations were the driver, you'd expect the drop to concentrate where enforcement is heaviest. It does not. The deportation are wrong also. The Migration Policy Institute counts about 980,000 deportations through July. Roughly two-thirds were people stopped at the border, who weren't living here and committing crimes here. About 190,000 had any criminal conviction, and the most common were illegal entry and traffic offenses. So the claim implies ~2,500 murders a year would have come from that group. That's an offending rate more than a hundred times the national homicide rate (!!!) Even using the 3M figure, which includes self-deportations, it's wildly implausible.
