The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office (SJSO) filed additional charges against inmate Dustin Furnal (42), for Solicitation to Commit Murder and Tampering in a First-Degree Felony Proceeding.
Through investigative efforts, SJSO Special Investigations Unit (SIU) detectives discovered Furnal was communicating with a subject to arrange the murder of an individual scheduled to testify against him in a pending criminal case.
Detectives reviewed hours of recorded conversations, jail calls, and visitation recordings, between the two discussing the alleged plot.
Furnal has been incarcerated in St. Johns County since June 2026 for multiple felony charges, including Trafficking in Fentanyl, Trafficking in Methamphetamine, Unlawful Use of a Two-Way Communication Device to Facilitate a Felony, Tampering with Evidence, Conspiracy to Traffic Methamphetamine, Possession of a Controlled Substance without a Prescription, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Cocaine, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.
Furnal's bond was revoked on October 17, 2026. He remains in custody at the St. Johns County Jail without bond.

On Saturday, September 12, St. Johns County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a report of a missing 16-year-old, Benjamin Adcock, who is diagnosed with schizophrenia and mild autism.
SJSO quickly shared Benjamin's information and photo on social media and requested the community's help. At the same time, deputies, partner law enforcement agencies, and first responders mobilized resources including searching on foot, K9s, drones, and helicopters. A volunteer civilian search group, organized through social media, also joined the efforts to provide additional support.
On Monday, September 14, a good Samaritan who recognized Benjamin from social media located him safely.
Following his recovery, SJSO connected Benjamin and his family with tracking and education services for his safety in the event he wanders again.
SJSO recognizes the civilian volunteer group who dedicated their time to assist in the search for Benjamin. To show our appreciation, Sheriff Hardwick presented each civilian volunteer with a challenge coin - a token of appreciation recognizing their willingness to help. We are grateful for you!
If you have a loved one who may be prone to wandering, please consider enrolling in our local programs that assist law enforcement in locating individuals that may prevent them from being able to seek help on their own:
𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿 is designed to locate individuals who wander. Participants wear a bracelet on their wrist or ankle equipped with a small transmitter that emits a frequency signal. If the individual goes missing, trained law enforcement personnel respond to the area and use the signal to locate them. Participants must have a full-time caregiver (spouse, parent, guardian). Upon registration, the caregiver will receive education and training necessary to understand the equipment.
Register: sjso.org/project-lifesaver/
𝗞𝟵 𝗦𝗖𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗞𝗜𝗧𝗦 preserve an individual's unique scent using a personal item. Scent kits are designed for K9s to be able to track missing subjects. These are available to qualifying individuals who have been diagnosed with a disability that would impair them from being able to seek help for themselves.
Apply: sjso.org/k9-scent-kit/
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗔𝗙𝗘 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 enhances communication between first responders and residents with special needs. Upon registration, individuals or guardians will receive a sticker for their home and registered vehicles, which provides important information to law enforcement during contact.

Registration for each of these programs only takes a few minutes and can make the difference during an emergency.

This morning, October 20, the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners voted 3-2 in favor of revoking use permits for license plate recognition [LPR] technology on county rights-of-way. This decision requires the removal of 89 LPRs located on county rights-of-way, however, an effective date for disabling the systems has not been determined.
In September, the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office removed 84 LPRs in accordance with the Florida Department of Transportation’s directive to remove LPRs on state rights-of-way. SJSO is in full compliance with that order. LPRs on private property and those operated by HOAs will remain unaffected.
SJSO has consistently supported the responsible use of LPR technology, with safeguards in place. We have listened to community concerns, presented information, and corrected misinformation. We’ve enhanced controls, reduced data retention and access, limited information sharing, strengthened auditing, monitoring, and oversight to ensure compliance and prevent misuse.
We believe public safety and personal privacy can coexist and disagree with the decision made by the county commission to remove LPRs. We are confident this will ultimately affect the safety of our community.

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office has arrested and charged Hubert Estelle (32) with Armed Robbery with a Firearm, Grand Theft, Aggravated Assault with Intent to Commit a Felony (x5), and Wearing a Mask or Hood While Committing a Felony.
On Friday, October 16, just after 3 p.m., Estelle entered the Regions Bank on St. Johns Common Parkway Avenue armed with AR-15 style rifle, and wearing a face mask, gloves, and dark-colored clothing. Estelle demanded money and threatened violence, so, in fear, the employees provided the suspect with cash before he left the business.
Employees described the suspect vehicle as a white Audi sedan with white tape covering the license plate. Traffic cameras and license plate reader technology captured the vehicle matching the description in the area of St. Johns Parkway, just minutes after the robbery. Real Time Intelligence Center personnel were able to locate the same vehicle before the robbery occurred without the license plate cover.
Based on the information, further Investigative efforts led deputies to the Ascend Luxury Apartments on Mossy Pine Lane, where deputies located the suspect vehicle by 3:23 p.m.
At this time, SJSO deputies locked down the apartment complex to search for the suspect and safely evacuate residents within the building of interest. The SJSO SWAT team located Estelle inside his apartment and took him into custody. During a search of the residence, an AR-15 style rifle and the clothing worn during the robbery were located.

Sheriff Hardwick and victim advocate Ashley Mitchell joined law enforcement agencies across Florida in signing a custom 1971 Volkswagen Beetle dedicated to honoring first responders.
The vehicle was designed by Spencer Crutchley, in memory of his brother-in-law, a Lee County Sheriff's Office deputy.
Spencer is traveling across the state to pay tribute to those who protect and serve our communities. We are grateful he made a stop in St. Johns County and #TeamSJSO is proud to be a part of the mission.
The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center has renewed its certification with the Missing Kids Readiness Program (MKRP), a nationwide initiative led by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (@NCMEC).
This program recognizes agencies that demonstrate excellence in training, preparedness, and best practices for responding to incidents involving missing, abducted, or exploited children. The SJSO Communications Center is one of the only 12 emergency communications centers in Florida to hold this distinction.
SJSO Public Safety Telecommunicators continue to show their dedication to protecting the children and families of our community. Through ongoing training and strengthened policies, we remain committed to serving our community at the highest level.
We are grateful for our continued partnership with NCMEC and excited to contribute to this national effort to keep children safe.
