More on rogue agents hitting Wikipedia in this week's Dispatch: dispatch.techoversight.org/b…
“AI companies are not doing enough to secure their systems and protect the public from the harm they cause … The open web is a public good.”

📕 Yearlong Senate #MakeBigTechPay investigation into data centers finds:
- Big Tech companies get huge tax breaks
- Jobs barely materialize
- 0/7 of the developers investigated would agree to cover new power infrastructure built to serve them

🎬 Hollywood has found its new villain, and it runs a Big Tech monopoly.
That's this week's top story in The Dispatch, your weekly updates on all things tech accountability. dispatch.techoversight.org/b…
Find out what your state gave away to Big Tech, how much more families are paying, and who voted for it. Our fact sheets have the numbers for 14 states: makebigtechpay.org
"The companies profiting from AI should pay for the power they burn, not the family or small business next door. This framing works from Senate races to county commissions because data centers and their costs are fundamentally local – and because the tax giveaways are outrageous." -@sachalouise
Opposition is rising despite AI super PACs spending more than $77M. 71% of voters oppose a data center in their area, and 85% want a law forcing Big Tech, not taxpayers, to pay the true cost. techoversight.org/2026/10/05…
Data centers are on the ballot: in August, the NRSC warned AI companies they were dragging down Sen. Jon Husted in Ohio. Trump sided with the CEOs anyway, saying towns that reject data centers want to be "backwards and poor." Now, Democrats are running 40+ ads in two dozen races. politico.com/news/2026/09/06…
MAKE BIG TECH PAY: The closing argument on data centers.
Big Tech has claimed billions in public subsidies to build data centers voters don't want, and now families are paying the bill. Here's why that matters for the midterms - and how to take action 🧵

Respectfully, this is not encouraging at all. There is very little space between industry and government leaders -- why do we think it's been impossible to pass ANY tech policy on the federal level?
Big Tech is already in the room. They're already writing the laws. Sam Altman is on the Hill or in the WH every other day. Mark Zuckerberg & Jeff Bezos have houses down the street from the VP.
Dems are rightfully pivoting to campaigning against data center "developers" -- i.e. Big Tech -- and they will win back the House on a tech accountability platform.
The Big Tech CEOs who have spent the last 2.5 sucking up to Trump with bribes & acquiescence deserve to be left out in the cold.
This is an encouraging effort to bring industry and government leaders together to pass the kind of sensible AI oversight we need. It is possible to heed the warnings of so many AI researchers and address safety concerns without sacrificing the technology’s benefits. But time is running out; the federal government must act quickly.

"Big Tech companies don’t fix their products on their own – they change only when forced to by a jury, court, or legislature. California just sent a clear message to the rest of the country that our kids’ wellbeing comes before engagement metrics and Big Tech profits.” – @sachalouise
Yesterday Gov. Newsom signed a package of youth online safety bills we're proud to have fought for, including the Kids Code 2.0, which we co-sponsored, and Adam's Law.
Big Tech lobbyists spent years trying to stop these bills. They lost; California families won.

Almost 2 years ago I wrote about how Big Tech's immediate pivot to Trump would result in public backlash. This was even before the CEOs sat front row at inauguration, settled with Trump for millions, and paid for his illegal ballroom.
Big Tech has squandered the goodwill they once had. They've lost our trust.
So while Republicans ask Big Tech for help as their industry-friendly candidates drown all over the country, Democrats are realizing we need to go all in against the Big Tech companies whose data centers destroy communities and their platforms addict and harm kids.

Replying to @JasonBeeferman
AND the DCCC updated its redboxes, it's now asking super PACs to run negative ads or run polling on data centers in at least 11 House districts politico.com/news/2026/09/06…
Congress has the ability to pass permanent design changes into law that would protect every kid on every platform. It's time pass the Senate's version of KOSA.

TOP's @SachaLouise: "This is a historic settlement that will have a lasting impact, but we cannot truly protect all children and teens until these protections are required on every platform and are permanent – that’s something only Congress can do." techoversight.org/2026/08/26…

So @Meta gave $10m to Trump's dark money c4 and Trump helped Zuck get out of testifying by holding @ChuckGrassley's James T. Woods Act hostage
Sam Altman regularly attends Trump's fundraisers and his CEO gave $25m to Trump's superPAC as @OpenAI lobbies Rs for immunity.
The 2027 Oversight Hearings in a Democratic House are going to be lit
Lotta scoops in this story: Meta recently gave an undisclosed $10M contribution to Trump's Securing American Greatness C4. Apple gave $25M to the ballroom, Microsoft gave $10M, and much more. W/ the great @jdawsey1 @AnnieLinskey @EmilyGlazer

One hot topic where that's especially true: Data centers.
Battleground voters not only oppose data centers, they also don't buy the industry's spin, particularly when it comes to jobs.
