That's what Renova NIGL Hospital in Hyderabad has been ordered to pay ₹1.77 crore. In 2020, a 6-year-old girl swallowed a ₹1 coin. At the Banjara Hills hospital, doctors suggested removing it through endoscopy. Her parents say she lost her sight, her speech and now lies bedridden with 100% permanent disability. Hyderabad District Consumer Commission II has now held the hospital liable for medical negligence and imposed the ₹1.77 crore penalty. A ₹1 coin. A lifetime of damage. Years of fighting.

My salary is ₹1,43,000. This month the SMS said ₹14,30,000. One extra zero. ₹12,87,000 that was never mine. By noon, I had spent it twice in my head. By 4 PM, payroll called. "Sir, there's been a processing error..." "I know. I was about to call you." Silence. Then: "Most people don't." The money went back by evening. My manager's message the next morning shook me. One zero can change your bank balance. One decision can change your career.

Jio IPO buzz has everyone watching Reliance. Every feed. Every group chat. Every new tip. But when was the last time you checked your own position? Down 20%. No stop-loss. It's easy to miss these things when you're busy watching the market or convinced your view will play out. That's where @Upstox Trading Nudges can help. They flag situations like a position losing over 20%, right on your Position screen, so you can take another look. Need to add a stop-loss or target? It's just a tap away, if you choose. No blocked trades. Just a reminder to check in before moving on. Because watching the market is one thing. Managing your risk is another. #Upstoxhaitohbetterhai #Reliance #JioIPO #TradingPsychology #RiskManagement #StockMarketIndia

Buyers bought flats in Godrej Summit, Gurugram. The brochure promised a 24-metre road linking the project to the Dwarka Expressway. Seven years later, that road still wasn’t built. Only an alternative gate on a narrow, encroached road existed. Godrej blamed the authorities and went to the High Court. The NCDRC said the promise was the builder’s to keep. It ordered Godrej Projects to refund over ₹4 crore across five cases, with 9% interest. Save this — brochure promises are part of the deal.

Flexi cap vs Multi cap: "invest anywhere" isn't the same as "invest everywhere." Flexi cap: min 65% in equities. The manager decides how much goes into large, mid and small caps. Multi cap: min 25% each in large, mid and small caps. Fixed by rule. What this looks like in practice: Flexi avg: 51% large | 19% mid | 16% small Multi avg: 35% large | 27% mid | 28% small One popular flexi cap fund holds 65.25% in large caps, only 8.32% in mid caps and 2.76% in small caps. That freedom has pulled flexi caps towards large companies. 5Y annualised returns (category avg): Multi 11.13% vs Flexi 9.11% "Flexible" doesn't mean diversified. Check what your fund actually holds, not what its name says. Past returns don't guarantee future results.

The headline says internet access expanded. The stories behind it are more interesting: the local seller reaching new customers, the student accessing a lecture, the creator finding an audience beyond their city. Jio played a significant role in India's mobile connectivity shift. The next story is about who gained access, who benefited and where the gaps remain.

A Visakhapatnam woman died of a heart attack five days after her HDFC Life policy came into force. Her husband, Bhaskar, was the nominee. HDFC Life cancelled the policy and rejected his claim, alleging she had misstated or hidden facts. The Visakhapatnam commission found no evidence of that on record, called it an unfair trade practice, and ordered ₹50 lakh. Save this — an early death alone isn't grounds to deny a claim.

In 1991, India physically flew its gold out of the country to avoid going bankrupt. How did it come to that? India’s foreign exchange reserves had shrunk to about two weeks of imports. The causes stacked up: heavy government borrowing, a spike in oil prices after the Gulf War, falling remittances from Indians in the Gulf, and political instability. Foreign lenders stopped trusting India. To raise dollars, the RBI pledged around 47 tonnes of gold to the Bank of England and UBS, raising roughly $400 million. It was humiliating, and it was kept quiet at first. But it forced a reset. The government of Narasimha Rao, with Finance Minister Manmohan Singh, devalued the rupee and began dismantling the licence raj. India’s modern economy was born from a crisis that left no other option. Sometimes the worst moment is what finally forces the right reform.

A 233-year-old bank, once banker to kings and governments, was destroyed in 1995 by one man in Singapore. His name was Nick Leeson. Barings was one of Britain’s oldest merchant banks, founded in 1762. Leeson ran its futures trading in Singapore. He was also in charge of settling and recording his own trades, so no one checked him. When trades went wrong, he hid the losses in a secret account numbered 88888. Then he doubled down, betting heavily on the direction of Japan’s Nikkei index. In January 1995, the Kobe earthquake hit and the Nikkei fell. His losses ballooned. By the time Barings found out in February, the loss was about £827 million, more than the bank’s capital. The bank collapsed and was sold to ING for £1. The failure was not just one rogue trader. It was a firm that trusted one person with both the bets and the books.

Three Mohali residents paid MakeMyTrip ₹13 lakh in total for a Switzerland tour in May 2023. The Swiss embassy refused their visas. MakeMyTrip offered just ₹1.1 lakh each — or extra money to reschedule. The Chandigarh commission found it couldn't prove it filed proper documents or paid any hotels. It ordered refunds with 9% interest, plus ₹35,000 to each traveller. Save this — ask for proof, not excuses.

B Meenakshi, 69, flew from Hyderabad to Singapore to visit her daughter. IndiGo tagged her bag under another passenger's name and sent it to Sydney. It reached Singapore 10 days later, damaged and underweight. IndiGo's offer: a ₹3,000 travel credit valid for six months. The Hyderabad consumer commission held IndiGo deficient in service and ordered ₹2 lakh plus ₹10,000 in costs. Save this — don't settle for a voucher.

In 1637, a single tulip bulb sold for more than a house on an Amsterdam canal. Then, in one week, nobody wanted it at any price. This was Tulip Mania in the Dutch Republic, then the richest trading nation in the world. Why did it happen? Merchants had new wealth and wanted status symbols. Rare tulips, streaked with color by a virus nobody understood, were genuinely scarce. Bulbs only bloom in spring, so in winter people traded paper contracts for bulbs still underground. They could bet without paying in full or even owning a bulb. Taverns became trading floors. Merchants, craftsmen and shopkeepers all joined in. There were no rules and no reliable way to enforce contracts. Prices kept rising, neighbors got rich, and FOMO did the rest. Then in February 1637, an auction in Haarlem drew no buyers. Prices collapsed. The market ran on one belief: someone will pay more tomorrow. When that broke, everything broke. Follow the money. Every time.

Nitin Gambhir took five LIC policies in 2010. He died in 2013. LIC rejected all five claims, saying he hid diabetes. His mother, Jayshree, fought for 12 years. For two policies, LIC relied on premium receipts dated September 13 — but she produced receipts dated September 7, four days before Nitin was hospitalised. The NCDRC ordered ₹60 lakh with 9% interest since 2014, plus ₹1.5 lakh. Save this — keep every premium receipt.

A Delhi travel agency booked 640 Akasa Air seats to Goa for Christmas–New Year 2023 and paid a ₹4.82 lakh advance. Akasa cancelled them all without notice, months before travel, and refunded the advance. Its defence: group bookings needed a 50% advance. The Delhi commercial court found no proof the agency was ever told that, and ordered Akasa to pay ₹1.08 crore for lost profits. Save this — a refund doesn't erase a broken contract.
