The State Department for ICT and the Digital Economy has won the Smart Gigacity Excellence Award at the World Broadband Association (WBBA) Broadband Excellence Awards 2026, announced on 14 October 2026 at VIECON in Vienna, Austria. The prestigious award recognises Konza Technopolis, developed by the Technopolis Development Authority, as a global model for gigabit-enabled urban development, integrating high-speed connectivity, artificial intelligence, cloud computing and intelligent infrastructure to deliver efficient, sustainable and people-centred urban services. At the heart of Konza's smart city ecosystem is a 79-kilometre fibre backbone, 141 smart poles and an AI-powered Intelligent Operations Centre that supports real-time city monitoring. Complementing this infrastructure are the Konza National Data Centre, automated waste collection, water reclamation and smart energy systems, demonstrating how technology and sustainability can work together to transform urban living.
