Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis agrees to reconsider the 2016 Tummidihatti Barrage agreement, subject to technical studies and no adverse impact on Maharashtra.
In a significant development, Telangana CM Revanth Reddy met Fadnavis in Mumbai and sought an increase in the barrage height from 148 metres to 152 metres.
Key developments:
▪️ Telangana explained that a 152-metre barrage would allow water to flow through gravity, reducing dependence on costly pumping systems.
▪️ Telangana offered to compensate Maharashtra farmers for agricultural land affected by submergence, as per Maharashtra’s rules.
▪️ Revanth Reddy highlighted Adilabad’s five-decade struggle for irrigation and drinking water, particularly among tribal and Adivasi communities.
▪️ Fadnavis proposed a joint committee of senior irrigation officials from both states to study water availability, submergence, compensation and technical feasibility.
▪️ The committee will prepare a roadmap for the next steps.
The project has been under discussion since 1975. After five decades, Telangana and Maharashtra are now examining a possible way forward, with the final decision on the 152-metre proposal still pending.

RED ALERT FOR ANDHRA PRADESH: Cyclone Arnab forms over Bay of Bengal, likely to make landfall on October 28.
Cyclone Arnab intensified from a deep depression early Monday morning and is expected to become a severe cyclonic storm by midnight and a very severe cyclonic storm on October 27.
According to IMD, the cyclone is likely to cross the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam by Wednesday morning (October 28), with wind speeds of 115–125 kmph, gusting up to 140 kmph.
At 5:30 AM today, the cyclone was located about 650 km from Visakhapatnam, 730 km from Kakinada and 910 km from Bapatla.
IMD has issued a Red Cyclone Warning for Andhra Pradesh and adjoining South Odisha coasts.
