This is Father Giannicola Maria Simone. Milan rioters insulted him and flipped him off twice. He answered like this, blessing them. Italian national hero.

This Simpsons joke about Catholic v Protestant heaven is welded into my brain, especially because in the narrative of the show Catholic heaven is meant to be undesirable despite Christ himself preferring it

In my latest for @TheAtlantic, I wrote about the sacraments, a recent federal lawsuit, and how when given a choice between immigration restrictionism and religious liberty, the Trump admin has repeatedly chosen the former:

An American citizen joins the military.
He tries to enroll his wife, who is undocumented and came to America when she was six, in a program that allows close relatives of service members to stay.
The wife shows up to join the program with her four kids, and is arrested by ICE.
This is why elections matter. We are ruled by cruel, sadistic people.

The planned publication execution of Nidal Hasan is expression of the deep denial of human dignity that is at the heart of the moral rot of MAGA and the Trump movement. It is a kind of moral nihilism that is eating at the heart of this nation.

We should never look away from this direct assault on our country’s Constitutional values. What ICE has done on our streets is abhorrent, and they have done it with the complicity of so many.

"It is with shock and great sorrow that I have learned of the Department of War’s decision to publicly livestream the execution of Nidal Hassan. Our God is the God of life. In no way can Hassan’s actions be condoned but this decision is a barbaric promotion of a culture of death and must be reconsidered. The word of God exhorts us: ‘do not repay anyone evil for evil' (Romans 12:17). The public execution even of one who has done grave harm will only further undermine the moral fabric of our nation and be a blight on the conscience of its people."
