#OTD 1996 the Thames Path National Trail officially opened at the Thames Barrier in Greenwich. Since then thousands of people follow the National Trail's acorn icon on wooden and metal fingerposts along the 185.2 mile route from the source of the River Thames to the sea in London. Acorn-shaped batons made from two oak fingerposts featured in the Thames Path Relay #thamespath30

Three more Poems along the Thames Path by Robert Seatter can be read from QR codes installed at Bell Rope Meadow in Cookham, Caversham Lock in Reading and Millstream bridge in Goring. Each poem refers to the well-known artists associated with these Thames-side locations: painter Sir Stanley Spencer in Cookham, poet, playwright and aesthete Oscar Wilde who was incarcerated in Reading Gaol, and world-famous musician George Michael who lived in Goring. Thank you poet Robert Seatter seen hear reading 'Vigilance' about the Thames lock-keepers. #thamespath30

The Thames Path between seasons —where summer hasn't quite left, and autumn is arriving.
Still green overhead, golden leaves underfoot and that soft light that only happens when summer is gradually giving way to autumn.

What do you think about a new temporary route for the Thames Path between Hurley and Marlow? The potential new route was displayed at a public information event hosted by the Environment Agency on 16 Oct. The route requires permissions from private landowners as well work by the Environment Agency to widen weir walkways and provide alternatives to steep steps. Link to the EA survey 🔽

Black Poplar trees are distinctive along the Thames Path, mainly because there are so few of them! A new project aims to restore Black Poplars through the Thames valley by using DNA tests to identify suitable trees for propagating and planting to create a connected network of new trees along the Thames, helping restore a species that's been part of the landscape for centuries.
