There is something deeply troubling about the way accountability seems to operate so differently depending on who you are, how much power you hold and, perhaps most importantly, who you have around you. Justice doesn't always prevail, and consequences don't necessarily follow wrongdoing. We would like to believe that eventually, one way or another, people are held accountable for their actions. But life doesn't always work that way. Sometimes those who appear most deserving of scrutiny are also those best insulated from it. It's not so much a question of California values. It's a universal value: not an eye for an eye. That said, I can understand why this would be an incredibly difficult decision for the victims and their families. Life without parole means they will never regain their freedom. In that sense, Newsom is ensuring they don't have a life beyond prison walls. It's a different form of punishment, but a permanent one.

Decisions made by governments and those in positions of power can reach far beyond national borders, affecting economies, trade, international relationships, security and the everyday lives of people who may have had no say in the decisions being made. But there is a bigger issue here, and it isn't about political parties. It's about complacency. No politician, regardless of position or political beliefs, should ever become so comfortable in power that they forget who they are there to serve. Winning an election is not a licence to stop listening. Nor is it a guarantee that the public will continue to support you. This is about trust. Trust needs to be earned and, more importantly, maintained.
