"Malfoy."
She did not turn around. "Go away, Potter."
"I'm sorry."
That turned her around. She stared at him as if he had spoken Parseltongue. "You're what?"
"Sorry." Harry's hands were jammed in his pockets, and he kept them there. "For what I said. I meant it to hurt, and it did, and I shouldn't have."
"Don't." Her voice came out sharper than she wanted. "Don't do that. You don't get to be the decent one. That's not how this works."
"How does it work, then?"
"You say something horrible, I say something worse, and we both go off and hate each other properly. It's very simple. We've had years of practice."
"I'm not very good at it anymore."
She looked at the floor. Then at the wall. Then at the hem of her robes, which did not need straightening but got straightened anyway.
"I was going to say something," she said finally. "Before. The other night. I had it all worked out."
"What were you going to say?"
"That I was..." She stopped. Started again. "That the thing I called you was..." She made a small, furious noise. "This is impossible. Why is this impossible? I can say it to Cressy. I say it to Cressy all the time. Sorry, Cressy, I stepped on your foot. Sorry, Cressy, I borrowed your quill. It's one word."
"It's one word," Harry agreed.
"Then stop looking at me like that and I'll say it."
He looked at the ceiling.
"I'm sorry," Draconia said to the floor, very fast, like swallowing something bitter. "There. Happy? I'm sorry I said it. I didn't mean it. I mean, I did mean it, at the time, but I didn't mean to mean it, and then I couldn't take it back because you'd already gone, and I'm not chasing you down corridors like some..." She stopped. "I'm sorry."
Harry lowered his eyes. She looked exactly as she had on the train, years ago, with her hand out and nothing to hold it.
"Okay," he said.
"Okay?" She was outraged. "That's all? I nearly died saying that."
"What did you want me to say?"
"I don't know. Something. Not 'okay.'"
"Thank you, then."
She considered this. Her chin came up. "Better. Marginally." She turned to go, then did not. "If you tell Weasley about this I'll deny every word of it."
"I know."
"Good." A pause. "Idiot."
But she said it quietly, and she was almost smiling when she said it.
