Grassroots coaching is about more than football. You’ll wear many hats:
• Counsellor
• Mediator
• Teacher
• Pastoral Support
• Role Model
Be ready to make a difference beyond the pitch. These are often the most challenging, yet most rewarding parts of the role.
A young referee failed to award a penalty against my side & the opposition manager absolutely berated him!
How does he learn from that?
I spoke with him after, explaining why I thought it was a penalty and asked for his opinion.
Remember as referees they are on a journey too.

Grassroots football isn’t about creating the next superstar.
It’s about creating children who enjoy sport, build friendships, learn resilience, gain confidence and feel like they belong.
If they develop into great footballers that’s a bonus.
The experience comes first.

In my various coaching roles over the past week I’ve had 4 parents claim their child is with a professional club only to find out it’s a development centre in which they pay for!
Extra training ✅
Exposure to different coaches ✅
Academy player ❌
Understand the pathway….

Some parents chase the “best” badge instead of the best environment.
Facilities and reputation mean little if your child loses confidence, enjoyment or belief.
Development isn’t just about the level. It’s about feeling supported, challenged and valued.
Coaches I assume you are not planning on putting your potential Division 7 Under 12 League Championship title on your personal LinkedIn profile?
So stop managing teams like that’s all that matters!
Screaming at every 50/50 decision!!!
It’s grassroots…..Relax!!
Watching your child deal with setbacks in academy football can be difficult as a parent.
Being released, dropped, injured or overlooked can affect confidence deeply.
Sometimes they don’t need solutions.
They just need support, patience and someone who listens.

If you are paying money to a club you are NOT on an academy pathway.
Parents are paying ridiculous amounts & then telling everyone ‘little Tommy’ plays for a pro-academy for clout!
Just be a realist. If your child is good enough they will make their way without the nonsense!

One of the best parts of academy football is seeing your child develop habits that will help them for life.
Discipline, resilience, communication, accountability.
Football may not last forever but those qualities will.
The person they become matters more than the player.

There’s a fine line between supporting your child and putting pressure on them.
Sometimes parents don’t realise how much their words, reactions and expectations affect enjoyment.
Ask yourself this regularly;
“Is this still their dream… or is it becoming mine?”
Academy football teaches parents patience whether they like it or not.
Development is rarely linear.
One month they look unstoppable.
The next they struggle.
Progress at young ages comes with ups, downs and unpredictability.
Stay steady through both.
Academy football can quietly consume family life if you let it.
Weekends disappear, schedules revolve around football & pressure creeps into the home.
Protect balance at all costs because your child needs that more than football!
Not every tough conversation with a coach is an attack on your child.
Feedback can feel uncomfortable, especially when emotions are involved however honest coaching is often necessary for growth.
Guide your child to respond to criticism with maturity, not defensiveness.
