🚨 New paper alert on discovery harnesses! It turns out that the quality of sequential discovery depends on the quality of the initial population. Fixing the compute budget, we show that parallel prompting could serve as a powerful initialization, raising the discovery floor!
1/🧵New Research on LLM-Driven Discovery! LLMs are increasingly used to discover new algorithms, theorems, and drugs by iteratively optimizing an objective inside a "harness." Our finding: How you initialize a discovery harness matters a lot more than you might expect.

Gemini 4 Argon taught a robot to play cornhole just by watching a video. It mapped the physics, coded its own simulation, and taught @Apptronik's Apollo humanoid to sink 7 throws in a row.

🗣️ Can we evaluate the process of intellectual production rather than just the final text? Can we creatively design approaches to filter unaccountable research and nudge researchers and students toward genuine ownership of their work? Yes. 1/11 🧵

💥 The multiplication saga continues! It turns out, some frontier LLMs do struggle with simple multiplications. Unlike GPT-6-Astra, Fable 5.1 with low reasoning has a blind spot where the accuracy of, say, 5x6 multiplications drops to ~0%! The failure mode is very interesting: the 0% zone corresponds to a failure of adaptive thinking. The model decides that it shouldn't produce any reasoning and outputs the (wrong) answer directly. For larger multiplications, however, the model realizes it should produce a CoT first and then it gets the answer correctly. For very large multiplications (close to 20x20), the accuracy degrades again. How many such simple blind spots do frontier LLMs still have? This is why slowing down and carefully studying generalization and safety is the top priority... 1/2

Introducing Flow Reasoning Models. We developed a recurrent flow-based architecture to efficiently solve structured reasoning problems (e.g., Sudoku). FRMs apply continuous flows to discrete data and recurrently refine their past mistakes through self-conditioning.

Simple ideas often generalize best! Loss smoothing is one of those really simple ideas that works surprisingly well for adaptation under distribution shift. Really excited about this line of work!

Second installment in my series on understanding RL algorithms, this time on Baselines or the power of subtracting zero. Vanilla policy gradients have a serious issue: noise explodes on longer tasks. Double the episode length, and variance multiplies by eight 🧵

What if a foundation model could tell us how to modify its architecture to boost inference and reasoning instantaneously—without retraining? What if that tweak incurred near zero latency cost during generation and supported indefinite state tracking? arxiv.org/abs/2608.17981
