Could brain scansĀ measure improvement—not just decline? I'm excited to share our new study inĀ Brain Imaging and Behavior, which found that improvements in brain health are associated with measurable changes in the brain's physical structure over time. For decades, brain imaging has focused on shrinkage, damage, and disease. Our research flips that narrative. Using advanced MRI techniques, we tracked adults over four years and found that positive changes in BrainHealth Index scores correlated with changes in cortical complexity—the folds, ridges, and architecture of the brain itself. The takeaway? The adult brain remains dynamic. It can adapt, reorganize, and optimize throughout life. Even more intriguing, men and women showed different structural pathways associated with brain health gains, highlighting the importance of precision approaches to brain optimization. This work adds to a growing body of evidence that brain health isn't fixed—and that positive change is possible across adulthood. It leverages a massive data set emerging from the ongoing longitudinal study, The BrainHealth Project.Ā Grateful to my co-authors and BrainHealth Network collaborators at @CenterforBrainHealth, the @UniversityofKansasMedicalCenter, and @UCBerkeley for helping advance this important work: @AnkitPatel, @WilliamGuiler, @Mtdespo, @SandraBondChapman, @LoriG.Cook, @JeffreyS.Spence Link to the research publication in comments

Check out my latest Podcast conversation with @DrEasley: What Neuroscience Reveals About Aging, Dementia & God's Design with Dr. Robyn Honea Our culture is obsessed with living longer. The next supplement. The newest health hack. The latest longevity breakthrough. But what if our greatest hope isn't found in extending life… but in understanding the One who designed it? This episode is perfect for anyone navigating the realities of aging, caring for a loved one with dementia, working in healthcare or science, or wondering how faith and modern neuroscience fit together. Whether you're interested in brain health, wrestling with fears about the future, or seeking a biblical perspective on longevity and wellness, this conversation offers both scientific insight and lasting hope grounded in Scripture. As a physician, this blueberry study still impresses me. 🫐🧠 A six-month study of adults aged 65 to 80 found that daily wild blueberries significantly improved brain processing speed, helping you think and react faster. Even better: the improvements were especially noticeable in those with mild cognitive concerns, helping restore performance closer to those without issues. Simple, delicious, and powerful. Add a handful of wild blueberries (fresh, frozen, or powder) to your routine — your brain will thank you. What’s your favorite way to eat blueberries? Reference: Cheatham et al. (2023). I am proud to share a major milestone in our collective effort to redefine how we measure and improve the brain health span. New longitudinal research published in the @Nature Portfolio journal Scientific ReportsĀ demonstrates that cognitive decline is not inevitable. Driven by @LoriCookPhD and @SandraBondChapmanPhD from the @CenterforBrainHealth, this three-year study of nearly 4,000 adults (ages 19-94) demonstrated that brain gain is a measurable reality across the entire adult lifespan. This study further validates the BrainHealth Index (BHI) as a multidimensional tool capable of capturing upward potential in three main areas: clarity, connectedness, and emotional balance. These gains were directly tied to self-agency in action, meaning that when individuals engage with strategy-based tools, they can measurably optimize their brain performance. As a collaborator in the BrainHealth Network, I am excited to see this scalable, public health imperative gain global visibility. Stay tuned for our manuscript on the neuroanatomical correlates of the BHI! For years, women have asked whether hormones influence brain aging. Our new neuroimaging study suggests the answer may be yes—and that timing may be an important part of the story. Excited to finally share this work. #WomensHealth #Neuroscience #BrainHealth #Alzheimer #Neuroimaging sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

A simple blood test may be helping reveal the earliest signs of Alzheimer’s disease. In our new paper from @KUALZ, higher plasma p-Tau217 was linked to increased amyloid burden, reduced brain volume, and changes in memory-related limbic regions- even before dementia. This is important progress toward scalable early detection and prevention. #Alzheimers #BrainHealth #Biomarkers @morrisjillk @DrHeaterW @KUALZ frontiersin.org/journals/agi…

What happens to the brain when menopause occurs early? In our new preprint, we reviewed neuroimaging and neuropathology studies across adulthood. Over 75% show associations between early or premature menopause and: *small brain volumes *changes in white matter *markers linked to Alzheimer's disease This is an important and understudied area in women's brain health. #Neuroimaging #WomensHealth #BrainHealth osf.io/preprints/psyarxiv/et… via @OsfFramework

My goal is to expand neuroimaging knowledge on this platform. My question to students and researchers alike: How can I help you overcome an obstacle you are facing with neuroimaging whether in the classroom or laboratory? I would be happy to start a series to do just that.

There seems to be a major deficit in open access tools for neuroimaging education. Many universities do not even offer neuroimaging classes. I hope to change this. Message me if interested!
