News~ With a mix of excitement & melancholy, I announce that the Menachery Lab will be relocating to @EmoryUniversity @EmoryPediatrics @EmoryVaccineCtr this summer.

SARS-CoV-2 phenotypic trajectory and the Omicron Paradox. Discussion of the following pre-print and the complex intertwined pathways that have dictated phenotypic outcomes for SARS-CoV-2. This can be otherwise termed the pandemic to endemic trajectory: biorxiv.org/content/10.64898…

🧬 We're hiring! The Dept of Microbiology, Immunology & Cancer Biology at @UVA School of Medicine is searching for a Virologist — any rank (Asst/Assoc/Full Prof), any research focus.
Fantastic department and fantastic place to live!

A new/old SARS-CoV-2 paper for us is now in @NatureComms
nature.com/articles/s41467-0…
We submitted first in 2023 and due to a variety of reasons, it is now out, in 2026.
The manuscript details our look into conserved SARS-CoV-2 Omicron mutations outside the receptor binding domain.
This may also be why the N679K mutation is maintained in Omicron strains despite reducing replication and pathogenesis in the lung.
The lack of stability may also have implications on vaccine responses to Omicron, but needs further study.
Our new paper on #SARSCoV2 antagonism of stress granule (SG) responses is now out in @JVirology:
journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128…...
The work shows that disrupting motifs in NSP3 & N activates SGs, attenuates viral replication & disease offering a new approach to attenuate CoVs(1/4).
These findings indicate SGs, in addition to IFN pathways, can disrupt viral infection.
Notably, CoVs target both pathways with multiple viral proteins. These results suggest that targeting SG may be a viable alternative/addition to broad antiviral therapeutics against CoVs
Many thanks to @REliasAlvarado as this work finalized his thesis work. The study was also a a great collaboration between @emoryuniversity, @sutharlab, @tommygottago, and others (4/4)
New paper from our lab on #SARSCoV2 antagonism of stress granule (SG) responses.
Work shows that disrupting two key motifs that antagonize SGs attenuated viral replication, disease, and may offer a novel pathway to attenuate CoV infection.
Given the reduced immune stimulation, we determined if the YF/F17A could induce sufficient protective response as a vaccine.
We found the double mutant protected as well as vaccination with WT SARS-CoV-2.
Targeting SG antagonism may offer new pathway to attenuate CoV infection
Work wraps up @REliasAlvarado thesis project and was a great collaboration between @emoryuniversity & @utmbhealth with contributions from @sutharlab, @tommygottago, and many others (6/6).

I am honored to be elected as a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology Class of 2026. Deep appreciation to my collaborators and mentors, who helped shape this journey. Especially grateful to my former mentor, Mark Heise, who was also elected.
