India's bioeconomy is reportedly now worth $195 billion, growing 18% in just two years and on track to hit its $300 billion target by 2030. But the bigger challenge is not growth — it is governance. Biotech policy remains scattered across FSSAI, GEAC, CDSCO, and RCGM, with no single ministry empowered to set regulatory timelines or own the budget.
In this Report, Shambhavi Naik (@TheNaikMic), Anisree Suresh (@AnisreeSuresh), Arindam Goswami (@AriGos), Sarthak Pradhan (@PSarthak19), Anupam Manur (@anupammanur ), and Aditi Palo assess progress against 2024 recommendations and propose elevating DBT into a full Ministry of Biotechnology, alongside a three-pillar agenda to develop markets, secure feedstocks, and decentralise the bioeconomy to the states.

Should India build semiconductor fabs or just focus on chip design talent? On AI, should India double down on its application-layer strengths or prioritise foundational models?
If you often think about these questions, then we think you may like to take the Technopolitik survey designed by the Takshashila Institution. It aims to assess what people think about how India should navigate high-tech geopolitics.

@TheNaikMic argues that biotechnology's most consequential near-term contribution to defence lies in resilience-building rather than offensive use. She proposes a framework that combines technology readiness, military adoptability, and strategic impact. ippr.in/index.php/ippr/artic…

Seaweed is not just a coastal livelihood activity. It sits at the intersection of industrial biotechnology, climate strategy, coastal development, and import resilience, and countries around the world are investing in seaweed-based value chains.
In this episode, Sarthak Pradhan (@PSarthak19) speaks with Shambhavi Naik (@TheNaikMic) and Devleena Bhattacharjee (@devleenab) about India’s emerging seaweed economy, the sector’s major policy gaps, and how a lease-based tenure framework for seaweed cultivation sites can help India leverage the opportunities in this space.

Seaweed cultivation is increasingly being recognised as a key pillar of India's bioeconomy, but the sector remains far below its potential. The missing link is not policy intent or government grants; it is a secure, bankable right over the ocean.
In this Discussion Document, Devleena Bhattacharjee (@devleenab), Shambhavi Naik (@TheNaikMic), and Anupam Manur (@anupammanur) propose a Seaweed Ocean Lease framework that would unlock private investment, farmer credit, and large-scale coastal employment.

📢✨ New Issue Alert – Science Diplomacy ✨📢
Science diplomacy is no longer optional—it is becoming a strategic necessity.
The January–March 2026 issue of the Science Diplomacy digest by @CSIR_NIScPR , @CSIR_IND, captures this transformation, as global science cooperation navigates geopolitical fragmentation, technological acceleration, and emerging security concerns.
The issue situates itself within key global developments, including #RaisinaDialogue2026, where the Science & Diplomacy Initiative (SDI) was introduced, signaling a shift towards embedding science more firmly within strategic and foreign policy frameworks. The opening contribution by the GESDA - Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator team and perspectives from Prof. Tateo Arimoto, Senior Advisor to the President of Japan Science and Technology Agency —a contributor to the initiative—provide important insights into this evolving landscape.
Bringing together voices such as Marga Gual Soler, PhD, Clara R. Solé , Sanjay Bhattacharyya , and S.K. Varshney , the issue examines critical themes at the intersection of science, technology, and geopolitics.
Notably, it underscores India’s rising leadership in science diplomacy, particularly as a key actor representing and advancing the interests of the Global South in shaping equitable and forward-looking global science governance.
A key takeaway:
👉 The future of global cooperation will depend on how effectively we align science, policy, and diplomacy.

With strong agri feedstock, fermentation know-how from pharma, and manufacturing depth, India could cut petrochemical imports, open new farm markets, and supply sustainable industrial inputs globally. Case in point: India imported about $479.8 million of acetic acid in 2023.

Shambhavi Naik (@TheNaikMic) writes for @the_hindu on why biomaterials sit at the centre of India’s climate and industrial playbook.
Biomaterials let India hit several targets through one move. Domestic biomanufacturing can cut reliance on fossil-based imports, give farmers new income from crop residues, and push Indian industry into low-carbon export markets. It also backs national goals on waste reduction, single-use plastic bans, and climate action.

Shambhavi Naik (@TheNaikMic) writes for @the_hindu on why India must rethink its biosecurity playbook.
As new biotechnologies deepen our understanding of biology, they also lower barriers to misuse. The same tools that promise medical breakthroughs can be weaponised, making it urgent for India to upgrade its biosecurity frameworks before science outpaces safeguards.
