part of the reason genZ has such fondness for the prequels is, unencumbered by the pretentious retardation of chungus millenials and gen X, they correctly assess them as flawless kino, but beyond that, they were the last time big budget movies were good

TRAP continues the Shyamalan tradition of somehow blending the most human, and least human, actions imaginable into the same storyline. Truly no one else like him in the game.

A long, open letter to @conservmillen. I actually have a lot of respect for Allie Beth Stuckey, there's no ill will towards her. I just don't think she understands how much damage opinions like hers on horror films (or any other genre) do to the entire Christian Media industry. The entire industry is run as women being the primary consumer. I've literally heard stories about great films, books and TV shows being rejected by publishers and distributors because they polled their target demographic of avid readers of Amish Romance Novels and surprisingly they were not interested in Science Fiction. Lifeway was the distributor of Christian books, movies and music. Women were Lifeway's primary demographic. So Franklin, TN became the Christian media capital of the world, and all Christian media was for who they called "Bookstore Betty" I know the guy who tried to get Chronicles of Narnia funded prior to Walden Media selling it to Disney. Walden gave Christians the first right to buy. But Christian women didn't want fantasy and magic. So the rights were given to Disney. And well now, Netflix. I also know first hand how much Steve Deace struggled to prove there is a market for films outside of the Hallmark/Lifeway demographic. Hear me on this, as someone who has done marketing at the highest levels of Christian Movies...There are very few people who know the inner workings of the KLOVE industrial complex as well as me, and much fewer willing to speak against it and build something to dismantle the female demographic monopoly. Christian media executives do not have the courage to go against the opinions of women. They are the only audience they are interested in. For them, there is no male purchaser of Christian entertainment. They don't exist. It is not because men do not want it, but they refuse to invest the capital and take the risk to offend the women who already make up a lucrative Hallmark slop market. (If these men do exist, we need to talk) This is the primary reason why Christian's do not have a long term, sustainable pipeline for producing quality and broadly appealing, multi-generational pop culture. So Allie, I implore you to understand that the differences between men and women also mean that men and women like different kinds of entertainment. Horror, Action, Adventure, Science Fiction. "Christian Movie" is not a catch all for the Hallmark / Great American Family Genre. As much as the current industry wants it to be. This is a tightly controlled, marketing category that is fearlessly protected by major secular owned studios to keep Christian culture in the back of the bus. The Christian movies are made with permission from the secular studios distribution arms. So the Christian movies cannot upset the female demographic, and they can't upset the Hollywood studios who distribute them in theaters and on Amazon and Netflix. So calling out Horror films struck a nerve because every Christian on the planet wants better pop-culture and they know that statements like yours will be used for more Soros staffed and funded non-profits like The Faith and Media Initiative to keep things the way they are. (Ask me about this sometime if you want a real story on Christian entertainment) I am going to be the one who sees the outrage your post posted as genuine market opportunity and will continue building a way to dismantle this industry.

Finally watched this movie last night and have no real concept of what an alternative interpretation would be.
The point of hellraiser is that deviant sex is bad and will make you go to hell

Cinema is not primarily intellectual, but visceral, experiential. It shines in depictions of action and performance, horror and time. No novel could capture the genius of Jackie Chan.
I love cinema, but I wouldn’t say it’s on the same intellectual level as literature. I think we’ve been pretending it is for maybe a century, to make ourselves feel better about the latter’s decline.

Even saying Christians should reject depictions of torture is too limiting. Nevermind the Mel Gibson of it all -- one of the greatest works of art in church history features a lengthy catalogue of horrors seen on a journey through Hell. Also, the OG TX Chainsaw is a great movie.
I'd actually argue that horror is the most Christian genre of film. Obviously that's not true of the torture porn stuff -- films in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre tradition -- but supernatural horror is often subtly Christian and sometimes very explicitly Christian. It's the only category of film where the supernatural, demons, spirits, exorcisms, the Church, etc, are consistently taken seriously. The only genre where the priest might actually be the good guy. Horror has deep roots in Christian thought and tradition.

Everyone misinterprets this scene as simply being about Leia wanting to make Han "jealous." It's actually about Leia being sexually immature. She's afraid of Han Solo. Luke is injured and vulnerable. In the scene right before this one, Leia watches him as he floats helplessly in amniotic fluid while wearing a diaper. Unlike Han Solo, Luke is totally sexually non-threatening. Leia can be the initiator. She knows Luke will be passive and let her control the pace, tone, and every other aspect of the interaction, because Luke is still just a boy. He's like a doll she can play pretend with. But notice her hangup with Han Solo is that he's active and aggressive in sexually pursuing her. She repeatedly demonstrates that she's afraid of being held by him. She literally starts shaking when he holds her hands and starts moving toward her to kiss her. Han Solo is the initiator. Their first kiss is deliberately framed to place great emphasis on the fact that he's towering over her, moving toward her, and pinning her against the wall. As a result her kiss with Han Solo is actually passionate and erotic, whereas her kiss with Luke was obviously sexless. Basically Leia doesn't know how to be a woman, and so she's afraid of what Han Solo will do if she stops resisting him, because Han Solo is a man.

Anyone who says the later Harry Potter movies have to look like they narrowly survived a house fire because of their "darker themes" should be sentenced to 50 viewings of Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Since Harry Potter is enjoying a brief cultural renaissance it’s probably high time we talk about how it was Patient Zero for the “Game of Thrones aesthetic”; the phenomenon where a colorful fantasy world is, in film, reduced to colorless, serious, dour black colors with strange blue filters designed to make everyone look slightly anemic and the ambiance feel like dread. There was a concentrated effort by the films to try to milk Harry Potter for its horror elements to the detriment of the book’s vision, which are best seen in the Mary Grandpre official illustrations. Wizard robes are supposed to be garishly colorful to the point of looking less like a severe Victorian and more like what 90s Tories would imagine homosexuals would wear at a Renn Faire.

Which is only a trenchant or interesting observation if he's right about a) the state of the world visa vis 'late-capitalist catastrophe' and b) that left-wing utilitarianism is true, and he's right about neither.
Digger is actually about how creating art doesn’t help at all because instead of taking action people will just make art and pat themselves on the back for doing a good thing

The sane mind finds satisfaction and resolution in things being 'put to right' a marriage is a critical resolution to many stories that has been largely forbidden in modern writing. When you read/watch older stuff it becomes obvious, trivially obvious - you don't even have to look at Shakespearian Comedy - you just used to get a lot of movies where people got married at the end (Philadelphia Story, Robin Hood, Bluerbeard's Eighth Wife) or healed a separation (His Girl Friday, The Awful Truth, Parent Trap) Instead now you get the anti-writing element of sundry, chaos - Han Solo and Leia are divorced now chud, you yearned in VAIN! etc. Miserable.
The thing I love about the Malfoid saga is that the general consensus seems to be that the endgame is marriage and children. This is what our society hungers for: The re-assertion of the nuclear family.

Starting to understand that this is just the first time a lot of people have thought about baby’s first art topics and that explains the furor around the metanarrative equivalent of a somersault. You naughty people have been misrepresenting yourselves to me 🫣
I do think one of the reasons some are mad at Digger is that it coolly rejects the usual self-congratulatory affirmation of Art as #Resistance in The Present Darkness, affirming instead that yes, art and artists can be coopted, can aid and abet as easily as anyone else, and that some "art" might even sometimes be less authentic human expression than simply profitable bread and circuses useful for channeling rage at fictions and away from the reality that's actually harming us and that we do, indeed, have the power to change. Also: I'm finding *this* conversation far more enjoyable than the Great Odyssey Debate of '26!
