What does a football scout do? A big part of the job is watching one player closely for the whole match. You’re noting whether they check their shoulder before they receive, and how they cope when they’re pressed. Then it goes into a report the club can act on. Our Introduction to Football Scouting course covers this in ten short modules: what scouts look for, the difference between player and tactical scouts, how clubs find talent, and how match and player reports are written. It takes about two hours and ends with a certificate. The course is free. Start for Free: thepfsa.co.uk/football-scout… #FootballScouting #TalentID #FootballCareers #PFSA

How do football clubs scout players? At Manchester City, the process starts with a database of 650,000 footballers, according to Sami Mokbel's look inside the club's data operation for BBC Sport. So where does the scout come in? Filters reduce the database to a longlist of 20 to 50 names, which is then checked against the scouts' own list. The BBC says the two usually overlap a lot. After that, it is the scouts' diligence that takes the list down to about six, before deeper checks on injuries, athletic performance and behaviour. The data does the narrowing, but the scouts' diligence makes the shortlist. That judgement is what the PFSA Level 2 Talent Identification In Football course teaches, live with industry-expert tutors or self-paced, and it's CPD certified. thepfsa.co.uk/level-2-online… #FootballScouting #TalentID

Manchester City Women have a new scouting and recruitment department under Director of Football Therese Sjögran (club website, 7 Oct). The aim, she said, is to "hit those markets earlier" and to find emerging talent: "how do we spot them before anybody else does". The established names are watched by everyone. The advantage now lies in seeing a player a season early. Brighton track players worldwide mainly through data, but sporting director Mike Cave told BBC Sport that data alone is not the whole picture. "There's no single attribute or a single metric that we particularly go after." Character, background and fit matter just as much. "Ultimately, this is a people industry." bbc.co.uk/sport/football/art… #FootballScouting #TalentID

"As prices go up, scouts must go down." That is how @scoutedftbl opens its latest data dive. UEFA estimates English clubs spent €4.6bn this summer, more than the next eight largest European countries combined, so most clubs need somewhere cheaper to look. SCOUTED suggests the third tiers of the Big Five leagues, where the players are younger and there are more of them. Using @SkillCorner tracking data on 1,798 players who changed clubs, they found peak velocity held up better after a move than any other physical measure. In their words, "Speed travels." The article is just as clear that speed only gets you so far: "Speed gets a player noticed; the rest of the profile decides the fee." Angers paid Épinal €150,000 for Estéban Lepaul, and a season and a half later Rennes paid €13.5m for him. Which third tier would you scout first, and why? Ligue 3, 3. Liga, Primera RFEF, Serie C or League One? The PFSA Level 2 Talent Identification In Football course covers performance profiling, which is how you judge the rest of a player's profile once their speed has caught your eye. It is CPD certified and taught live by industry-expert tutors or self-paced: thepfsa.co.uk/level-2-online… #FootballScouting #FootballAnalytics xitter.cf/scoutedftbl/status/210…
As prices go up, scouts must go down. The transfer market has split into four and young players are more expensive than ever before. For clubs looking to find value, remain competitive and take advantage of the increasing demand for young prospects, they must keep a close eye on the Big Five third tiers. Using @SkillCorner data, we have identified key attributes that are travelling up the ladder. These players are surviving the jump and, unsurprisingly, they cost less. Whether signing genuine third-tier breakouts, jumping early on a reserve player, or monitoring a successful loan spell, there is value and talent in abundance. Not every third tier is the same. England, France, Spain, Italy and Germany all have their quirks and traps. But keeping tabs on this enormous pool of young talent is becoming increasingly important as the Premier League spending fractures the market further. All of this and more in our latest data dive: scoutedftbl.com/mining-third…

The hidden gem, according to Midtjylland technical director Kristian Kjaer, "almost does not exist any more in football". In a thoughtful BBC Sport piece by Alex Bysouth, Kjaer explains how his club runs traditional scouting and data scouting side by side, and why neither replaces judgement: "We cannot just turn on the computer and it tell us who to sign." Data narrows the search. Knowing a player's background, projecting how they will develop and judging whether they will suit a club remain the scout's job, and the best 12-year-old is not always the best 18-year-old. Worth a read if you work in recruitment or hope to: bbc.com/sport/football/artic… Projecting potential is what the PFSA Level 2 Talent Identification In Football course is built around, from talent indicators and early predictors to performance profiling. Fixtures are now online on the PFSA Scouting Network. PFSA certified Level 2 scouts can now see which fixtures are available, claim one, read the club's brief and submit their report in one place, with the deadline and report template alongside. Once certified, scouts on the network can take on first-team assignments, writing individual player and match reports as high as the Championship. If you are already certified, log in at network.thepfsa.co.uk to see what is available to claim. If you are not yet, the route in is the PFSA Level 2 Talent Identification or PFSA Level 2 Opposition Analysis In Football course. Both are CPD certified and taught live by industry-expert tutors or self-paced, and the next live online intake starts on the 21 November. Details at thepfsa.co.uk. #FootballScouting #TalentID
