What Should Institutions Check in Their Own Portfolio?
Here’s what to look for in your own allocation right now:
✅ Look underneath the validator.
✅ Check commission against the justified range.
✅ Track Nakamoto coefficient and HHI as a trend.
✅ Decide whether your diversification target is validators, infrastructure, or both.
A team can spend two months evaluating five validators, choose well, and still be exposed six months later.
Static analysis answers a point-in-time question. But the concentration risk is a moving target.
Why “Diversified” Often Just Means Familiar
When institutions say they’re diversified, what they usually mean is they’re not putting all their eggs in one basket, at least not by name.
Next, they typically focus on institutional brand names. They diversify across big, recognizable validators.
But there’s a wider field they’re not looking at.
Many more institutional-grade validators do a phenomenal job but simply aren’t big brand names.
Based on Polli’s scoring data, the top 20 performing validators are not the same set as the top institutional brand names.

How do you know when concentration exists, and how do you measure it?
First is the Nakamoto coefficient.
The smallest number of validators that would need to fail or collude together to threaten a network.
Next is HHI.
It is calculated by squaring each entity’s percentage share of the total staked assets and adding them all together. The result, between 0 and 10,000, is the HHI score.
Check the concentration snapshot taken from Polli’s data across the three networks we manage stake on in our latest blog post.

Concentration risk breaks down into three separate problems for a delegator:
✅ Lost Yield
✅ Higher Commission
✅ Governance Exposure

Nobody decides to concentrate a network.
It happens one reasonable decision at a time: delegators pick the biggest, most reputable operator, and stake piles up behind the same handful of names.
That's staking concentration risk, and it's bigger than "spread across 20 validators."
Our CEO Elay Carmon breaks down what the data actually shows:
→ Why "diversified" often just means familiar
→ The real cost hiding in yield and commission
→ What to check in your own portfolio right now

Are you still only looking at validator-level metrics? That’s where most correlated risk hides.
Ask these questions about every validator you stake with:
✅Ask who hosts them, in which city, and on which autonomous system.
✅ Map the set by operator and city rather than by validator name, rolling operators up by company.
✅ Set an exposure cap per operator and a separate cap per city, since one does not cover the other.

Staying at the top of validator performance takes real, ongoing upkeep.
Very few operators stay current. It comes down to:
Choosing the best software
✅Running the latest client.
✅Watching your own performance day to day.
✅ Most validators fall short on at least one.

What is a silent technical failure in staking?
A silent technical failure is a validator that degrades or goes offline without triggering the alerts or slash records that would normally flag a problem.
It stops performing the way it should. Unless someone is watching closely, nobody notices until the damage is done.
The word “silent” describes the timing more than the mechanism: you find out what happened once it has already cost you.

Two days ago, a single routing failure at one hosting operator took nearly 29% of all staked SOL offline at once, which could have been a catastrophe for the Solana network.
Luckily, the incident ended after 33 minutes, and all was restored. That's the problem with silent technical failure:
How do you identify them in the first place?
How do you time them?
Our founder @elay99 breaks it down in our second article in this institutional staking risk series: polli.co/staking/silent-tech…
Slashing and jailing are treated as the same thing.
They are not.
And the difference matters more than most delegators realize.

Every blockchain network makes the same promise:
No single party or small colluding group should control enough of the network to dictate what happens on it.
Concentration is when a handful of validators end up holding more voting power than the network’s design was meant to allow.

At institutional scale, every basis point is real money.
Underperformance is not a rounding error. It is tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars.
A missed epoch on Solana runs about 3 basis points, roughly $30,000 on a $100 million position.

Staking gets sold as a passive line item:
✅ lock the capital
✅ collect the yield
✅ check back next quarter
Unfortunately, that's not the full picture.
It's costing institutional delegators money they don't even know they're losing.
Our founder @elay99 breaks down what each risk actually costs a delegator, and what Polli does about it.

The Allocation Layer is crypto’s final infrastructure frontier.
It’s no longer about whether capital can be deployed, but whether it can be managed with institutional precision. The gap between what exists and what is required is immense.
This is why we built Polli.
Polli bridges this gap as the first active, non-custodial allocation intelligence layer. We turn your risk policies into real-time, automated on-chain execution.

Crypto allocation is an architecture constraint, not a people problem.
Foundations spend 4 to 6 months on a single cycle of validator re-delegations.
By the time a manual review cycle finally closes, validator conditions have already shifted.
Polli fixes these bottlenecks by delivering always-on, non-custodial allocation intelligence to fully automate and optimize your staking workflows.

🚨 An important reminder for all $LAVA holders restaking and optimizing with Polli.
Polli supports other Cosmos Hub wallets such as @keplrwallet or @IBCwallet.
Important Migration Notice for Leap Wallet Users 🌋
Leap Wallet has announced it will sunset and cease all operations on May 28, 2026. If you are currently accessing the Lava Network using @leap_wallet, you must migrate your keys to a supported wallet interface to ensure uninterrupted access to your assets.
Because Leap is non-custodial, your assets remain secure on-chain. To maintain access, you're required to back up your seed phrase or private keys from Leap and import them into another supported interface. We recommend migrating to @keplrwallet.
Once your keys are securely imported into Keplr, you can continue managing your LAVA network participation seamlessly. Below is a list of alternative ecosystem interfaces for staking, restaking and tracking operations:
Staking & Interface Operations:
• Keplr Dashboard: wallet.keplr.app/chains/lava
• Lava Center: lavacenter.xyz
• Lava Pulse: lavapulse.xyz
• Stavr Explorer: explorer.stavr.tech/Lava-Mai…
Restaking & Optimization:
• Polli: polli.co
We want to thank the Leap Wallet team for their historical support of the Lava Network ecosystem.
Please ensure your migration is complete ahead of May 28.
