What if you could watch your favorite horror movie with the people who made it?
Tales From The Set is our new watch-along commentary series. Each episode brings in an actor, director, or crew member from the film to watch it with us in real time and share the stories you won’t find in any behind-the-scenes featurette.
Every scene, every effect, every on-set disaster, told by the people who were there.
The scariest moment in Halloween isn't a kill. It's Michael pinning Bob to the wall, then tilting his head to study him. No music sting, no words, just curiosity. Pure dread.
What's the creepiest silent moment in any slasher? #Halloween #JohnCarpenter
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre dinner scene was shot in one 26-hour stretch inside a sealed house that hit around 120 degrees. The food rotted under the lights and Leatherface's costume was never washed. That misery is all on screen.
Scariest scene: the dinner or the meat hook?
The mechanical shark in Jaws worked in freshwater tests, then kept breaking down in the salt water off Martha's Vineyard. So Spielberg hid it and gave us fins, barrels and shark POV shots.
The broken shark made the movie.
Horror fans: Ellen Burstyn's scream when Regan throws her across the room in The Exorcist is real. A crew member yanked her harness too hard, she hurt her back, and Friedkin kept rolling. That take is in the movie.
Horror fans: the guts in Alien's chestburster scene were real animal organs from a butcher's shop, and Veronica Cartwright didn't know a blood jet was aimed at her face. That reaction is real.
Still the best shock scene ever filmed.
Chestburster or facehugger?
The Shining crew built easy-break doors for the axe scene. Jack Nicholson, a former volunteer fire marshal, tore through them like matchwood. They ended up making about 30.
Horror fans: The Thing (1982) station interiors were Universal soundstages chilled with portable ACs and misters so the cast's breath fogged on camera. Coldest fake Antarctica ever. Name a colder horror set. One word.
Halloween (1978) might have the greatest bargain-bin origin story in horror. Michael's mask was a cheap Captain Kirk mask Tommy Lee Wallace bought on Hollywood Blvd, then widened the eyes, ripped off the sideburns and spray-painted dead white. Scariest prop ever made on a budget? #Halloween
Freddy in the gym still hits harder than most modern jump scares. What's your favorite Elm Street kill?
Modern women of horror. Who's on top? #31DaysOfHalloween
