Most people know Charles Eames for his furniture, but during the great depression he designed 2 churches in Arkansas (both named St Mary’s). Producing the pews for St Mary’s is thought to be his first experience producing furniture in volume (!!)

AI is shrinking the need for middle management I am seeing it with my own eyes. I’m hearing it from others. And you can see it in the layoff numbers If you’re in middle management, go figure out how to be closer to the work. And get more technical. Fast

The “as a Service” part of SaaS remains underrated.
The exploits of the last few days are a good reminder of why we use SaaS. Our company pays for ~20 SaaS services. If we self-hosted them, we’d now be responsible for all of the security patches this week. Instead, our small monthly bill pays for their teams to handle everything.

The real reason software pays the most: software margin structure is superior to other business categories (~75-85% gross vs ~15-50% gross) The fast rate of learning required is because software is a nascent material with near infinite malleability and application
I think many of us working in tech tend to forget that the reason software engineering vs other engineering fields pays (a lot!) more, is a lot more flexible (WFH/remote), and has better perks: Because this field changes much faster than other engineering fields. The premium is because fewer people are able/willing to pick up new technologies, methodologies so quickly. But the field had ~10-20 years of stability, and so lots of folks forgot this is why a premium exists. And that AI is just another tech wave: software engineers who pick it up and master it will generally fare better; those not will struggle a lot more.

Intake is a game changer for in-house legal. Proud to have worked on this launch with the team!
Introducing Intake, where every ask to legal gets routed and resolved. Requests come in through the tools your business uses, including email, Slack, Jira, and ServiceNow. Intake gathers the right context, then routes and resolves requests using your legal team’s rules: where each request goes, what agents can resolve autonomously, and what needs a lawyer’s review. Answers and follow-ups go back through the same channels. Go from request to resolution faster with Intake.

In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

With AI coding tools, 2 flavors of designer emerged: If you know how to code, you can wield AI effectively because you understand the shape of software. But if you don’t, that’s its own superpower because the bounds of possibility aren’t clear, and you surpass them

“..an operator will only be able to generate successful new strategies for unusual situations if he has an adequate knowledge of the process.” What do we lose as AI automates away manual tasks, and how do we re-gain tacit knowledge required to run AI systems effectively?

We’re ending our partnership with Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX. Under our proposal, Cursor’s direct access to our models would end on November 12. We know that the people most affected by this decision are the developers who rely on OpenAI models in Cursor. We care about their experience in this transition and we’re ready to go above and beyond to support them. openai.com/index/our-decisio…
