Software Engineer, building VR. In the wired or in the woods. Calling me weird is a compliment. #WeAreVR

Finally time to announce an idea I've been working on for a while. The VRDev.Net. VR projects have been getting harder to find and keep up with over the past couple years, so we made a place that makes that easier. For the builders by the builders. 1/4

Open Source SLAM Tracking for the Bigscreen Beyond is here! Now you don't need base stations to enjoy the Beyond in 6 DOF! This is perfect for people who have issues with base station tracking or just want something simple for their sim rig. Best part: it adds less than 16 grams!

"It found the TV on WIFI" So you're saying... that TV can be remotely RCE'd on local wifi...
Vibe coded my parents' TV this afternoon! It was showing a sponsored ad before you could even get to Netflix. Gave Claude Code the model number, it found the TV on wifi, removed 25 Xiaomi packages and wrote a new launcher. Looks like an Apple TV now lol

Out of all the engines/dev environments I've worked with Unreal Engine has by far the longest iteration loop, recompiling re-opening the entire project does not make it easy to quickly test small changes to UX things. Very good if they fix that.
Replying to @neonxgone
About 5x faster to prototype right now with Unreal Engine and 10x with ThreeJS. Working to reverse the gap by year end.

As annoying as Unity's recompile for 10 seconds every time you click back into the editor, the recompile of 200 c++ files from one header change and then taking 5 minutes to reload the whole editor does take a bit longer.

This is amazing news

Me when I find the nearly perfect looking rx7, easily in my usual price range, but I don’t have the money at this exact second to buy it because my current car cleaned me out

Has NASA ever said the words "Ahead of schedule"? DECEMBER?!!!!
JUST IN: NASA says its Moon Base is running ahead of schedule, with the first element now expected to launch in December followed by near-monthly robotic missions to the lunar surface beginning in early 2027. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the agency expects to beat the original national-space-policy target of putting the first Moon Base elements in place by 2030. The plan is to send infrastructure, rovers and other equipment ahead of astronauts so hardware is already operating on the surface when crews arrive. NASA is also developing a public website that will allow people to follow construction of the lunar base as missions arrive. “We’re leaving no doubts this time,” Isaacman said. “It’s all in HD.”

Instructions unclear, bought car roughly the same age as me, and I've been procrastinating a transmission swap for two weeks.

People need to spend money on games. Like, a lot more money. We're talking $100+ for good games.
what’s an opinion on VR that will have you like this?

Economic value wise they're selling their games for 10%-30% to of what games used to cost, while their teams are needing to reach a higher bar of quality and feature depth.

There's an argument to be made that off-the-shelf engines reduce the dev cost. I don't think it reduces costs by 70%-90%.

If I was a millionare that had the ability to just coast for a couple months I'd be making a complete IDE for myself inspired by vim, but with a source code I entirely own structured like a game engine.

Yes. I'm now saying that instead of taking weeks on my nvim config, we will instead paste "let there be rust nvim" into chatbot website for a couple months.

This just in, the famous ruby developer doesn't care about language perf
I can't believe that we're actually debating whether or why Rust — a systems level language meant to rival C/C++!! — would be much faster than the interpreted or GC-using alternatives people have historically used for web apps. Programming tribalism is a hell of a drug!

So far my issues with getting projects done has never been lack of skill, but lack of time. I've held out on using AI because I have a high standard for how I want my work to function. It's good enough now. It can't code for me but it can help me code at the level that I want to.

The 6 month side project is dead. They're now 1 week side projects. This is... good news I guess. I really enjoy 6 month side projects, but I guess I just have to ship things now?

After thinking about it, I'm going to choose not to be depressed. I'm going to choose to fully use this chance to make all of the very advanced things I want to, to the quality level I want to, and actually be left with the time to use them.
