šØ Double Standards Alert: The Same Voices Who Once Celebrated Ex-CJI Chandrachud Are Now Targeting Him
1. Ex-CJI DY Chandrachud was the darling of Opposition & left-liberal circles for years. They cheered his progressive rulings ā Right to Privacy, Section 377, Sabarimala, Aadhaar dissent, adultery law, and strong positions on Bhima Koregaon cases. He was called independent, intellectual, and progressive.
2. Now Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaulās memoir claims Chandrachud was ātoo deferentialā to the government on judicial appointments (seeking pre-approval of names before Collegium discussions). Suddenly, the same ecosystem is amplifying criticism and painting him as pro-government. Classic flip-flop.
3. What Karnan did to Kaul, Kaul is now doing to Chandrachud. When Karnan publicly attacked Kaul with serious allegations during his Madras HC tenure, the outrage was muted or defended in certain circles. SC later held Karnan in contempt. Today, Kaulās public criticism is being selectively boosted.
Judiciary independence cannot be selective. You either defend the institution consistently or you donāt. One day street pressure and demands for resignation, the next day weaponising one judgeās memoir against another ā the pattern is clear.

When Former CJI Chandrachudās judgments aligned with liberal causes, they were celebrated as evidence of a progressive judiciary. His privacy judgment, the Section 377 ruling and his Aadhaar dissent were repeatedly discussed in that context. But a judgeās legacy cannot be reduced to a highlight reel of politically convenient judgments. If judicial independence matters, it must matter even when the questions are uncomfortable.
