A routine stop-sign stop turned into two people being taken into custody after police asked one question twice:
“Anything in the vehicle we should know about?”
Both people inside the Jeep said no.
Cuyahoga Falls officers had stopped a 20-year-old woman after she rolled through a stop sign and failed to signal.
During the stop, officers spotted what they believed was marijuana-related evidence inside the Jeep. The occupants admitted they had smoked shortly before being pulled over, and officers searched the vehicle.
That’s when they discovered a concealed handgun.
The driver immediately claimed she had recently picked up the Jeep from her grandfather’s house and had no idea it was inside.
An officer told her that because she was driving the vehicle, she was responsible for everything found inside it.
That statement sounds simple.
Ohio law isn’t.
Constructive possession generally requires evidence that someone knew an item was there and exercised control over it. Simply driving or owning a vehicle does not automatically prove knowledge of every hidden object inside.
Then came the passenger.
He told officers he had a prior felony record.
Police say he later admitted the driver had told him about the handgun before the traffic stop.
That statement potentially changed things dramatically for him because Ohio law restricts certain people from knowingly possessing a firearm.
Both occupants were taken into custody.
The driver received the traffic citations and was also charged over the concealed handgun and a failure to disclose it.
The passenger received a prohibited-possession charge tied to his record along with a concealed-carry disclosure-related charge.
But there’s another wrinkle.
Ohio’s concealed-carry disclosure requirements are tied to licensed carriers and qualifying adults under the state’s permitless-carry law.
A qualifying adult must generally be at least 21 and legally permitted to possess a firearm.
The driver was reportedly 20.
The passenger had a prior felony record.
So while discovering the handgun created a serious situation, some of the legal explanations given during the stop may not have been nearly as straightforward as they sounded.
She was the only reporter who got Jack Ruby alone.
Then Dorothy Kilgallen suddenly passed away before the JFK story she believed could become the biggest scoop of her career ever came out.
Most Americans knew Kilgallen as the glamorous, quick-witted panelist on What’s My Line?
But behind the television personality was a relentless reporter who had covered some of the biggest cases in America.
And after President John F. Kennedy’s life was taken in Dallas, she wasn’t satisfied with simply accepting the official explanation.
During Jack Ruby’s trial, Kilgallen accomplished something no other reporter did.
She was granted a private conversation with Ruby - the man responsible for Lee Harvey Oswald’s passing - away from the rest of the press.
What Ruby told her during that conversation has never been fully revealed.
Kilgallen kept digging.
She later obtained Ruby’s testimony before the Warren Commission and published it before the Commission officially released the material to the public.
She openly questioned whether Americans had been told everything about Kennedy’s passing and continued pursuing leads long after many reporters had moved on.
Then, in 1965, Dorothy Kilgallen was found unresponsive inside her Manhattan townhouse.
She was only 52.
The medical examiner determined that a combination of alcohol and prescription sedatives was involved.
But one phrase on the official record has helped keep the mystery alive for more than six decades:
“Circumstances undetermined.”
Authorities reported no signs of foul play, and there has never been proof that Kilgallen was deliberately silenced.
But later authors and researchers have raised questions about her passing, what she may have learned from Ruby, and what became of the material she had gathered while investigating JFK.
Those theories remain theories.
The documented story is strange enough on its own.
Dorothy Kilgallen got closer to Jack Ruby than any other journalist.
She believed there was more to the JFK story.
She kept digging.
And whatever she learned during that private conversation with Ruby went with her.
One of the most famous reporters in America left behind a story she never got to finish.
