Well, another Cardinal has come out with a, shall we say, puzzling take on evangelization. A few years ago, Cardinal Américo Aguiar, at the time auxiliary bishop of Lisbon, said that he and the other organizers of World Youth Day in his hometown had no interest in converting anyone to Christ. Now Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco of Algeria has opined that “the Church is not there to convert” and “Christians should approach other religions through fraternity rather than seeking conversions.” Excuse me, but…what? Last time I checked, the Founder said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Sure sounds like conversion to me. When St. Paul came to Corinth or Athens or Thessalonica, his purpose was not to listen or to form a discussion group but rather to declare an unnerving message: the euangelion (glad tidings) that Jesus Christ is risen from the dead. So impassioned is he for this work that he says, “I have become all things to all people, that I might by all means save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel” (1 Cor. 9:22); and “If I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, and woe to me if I do not proclaim the gospel” (1 Cor. 9:16)! Moreover, the entire thrust of the Second Vatican Council was toward bringing the Light of Christ to the peoples of the world (Lumen Gentium). And this missionary élan has given rise in the last few decades to the idea of a “new evangelization,” which is to say, a fresh declaration of the Lordship of Christ. Quite obviously, no one thinks that this work of evangelization should be done in a brow-beating, overbearing, or disrespectful manner (proselytization), but for God’s sake, let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater. If I really thought that the Church does not exist to bring people to Christ, then I would resign and get an honest job.

On behalf of the Christians of the #MiddleEast, and of all women and men of good will, I appeal to those responsible for this conflict: cease fire! May paths of dialogue be reopened! Violence can never lead to the justice, stability and peace for which the peoples are waiting.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation restores our unity with God through the forgiveness of sins and the infusion of sanctifying grace. This generates the inner unity of the person and unity with the Church. It fosters peace and unity within the human family. One might ask: do those Christians who bear serious responsibility in armed conflicts have the humility and courage to make a serious examination of conscience and to go to confession?

I was watching highlights from President Carter’s funeral service at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. I found some of the speeches very moving. But I was appalled when two country singers launched into a rendition of John Lennon’s "Imagine."  Under the soaring vault of what I think is still a Christian church, they reverently intoned, “Imagine there’s no heaven; it’s easy if you try” and “imagine there’s no country; it isn’t hard to do. Nothing to kill or die for, and no religion too.” Vested ministers sat patiently while a hymn to atheistic humanism was sung. This was not only an insult to the memory of a devoutly believing Christian but also an indicator of the spinelessness of too much of established religion in our country.

Franco was a Hero
After Spanish dictator Francisco Franco died on this day in 1975, the elite survived unscathed during the democratic transition. But the consequences of fascism’s victory still live on today — in structural inequalities that plague the country. jacobin.com/2020/06/francisc…

We just were given a reprieve in America. In a miracle spasm of God's common grace, our society was spared its utter ruination. My hope is that this amazing reversal will revive the arts, which are listless and lifeless in our time. We need a renaissance of unwoke art--truly beautiful works of film, literature, painting, and other forms. We must not produce the cultural equivalent of fast food. We must play a much longer game. In the spirit of Jeremiah 29, we must invest, cultivate, till the soil, and plant crops for the ages. Now is the time when, in the smoking ruins of woke paganism, in the shattered wreckage of nihilistic leftism, in a day when the arts have been decimated and deprived and starved and almost bred out of existence, we must rebuild.

Debate “moderator” Linsey Davis just lied when she interrupted to claim that no state permits the killing of babies after birth. In fact, Kamala’s own running mate repealed the legal requirement that physicians attempt to "preserve the life and health of the born alive infant.”
