Even if GTA 6 flopped on Xbox ... it doesn't even matter.
Xbox has something even better for the November launch window, and if it came exclusively to Xbox, it would sell more consoles than GTA 6 ever could.

Physical games, same as digital?
On a PS5, a physical disc game is installed to the console’s internal SSD (solid-state drive) and primarily runs from there—not streamed live off the disc—making the playable version essentially identical to a digital download.
How the process works
1. You insert a PS5 (or compatible PS4) game disc into the disc drive.
2. The console automatically copies/installs the game data from the disc onto the internal high-speed SSD the first time you play it (you may be prompted to select optional add-ons). Some larger titles use dual discs (a data disc followed by a play disc).
3. After installation completes, you launch the game from the Games home screen.
4. You must keep the disc inserted while playing—it serves mainly as a license/ownership check (DRM). Without the disc, the installed game typically won’t run (unless you’ve also purchased or claimed a digital version of the same title, thanks to a 2023 system update that better unifies the two).
The installed files on the SSD are what the console actually executes for gameplay, loading, streaming assets, etc.
Why it doesn’t run directly from the disc
Ultra HD Blu-ray discs (the format used for PS5 games) have a theoretical maximum read speed of roughly ~100 MB/s. The PS5’s custom SSD delivers far higher sequential speeds—around 5.5 GB/s raw, with effective throughput even higher thanks to hardware decompression.
Modern games rely on this bandwidth for near-instant loads, seamless open worlds, and heavy real-time asset streaming. Running continuously from the slower disc would cause long loading times, stutters, and performance issues.
This full (or near-full) installation approach became standard starting with the previous generation (PS4/Xbox One) and is required on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, etc. The disc’s main ongoing role after install is authentication rather than continuous data delivery.
Same as a digital download
• The game data copied from the disc ends up as the same (or functionally identical) installed package on the SSD that a PlayStation Store digital purchase would download.
• Both versions take up comparable storage space once installed, support the same patches/updates (downloaded over the internet), and deliver the same performance.
• The primary differences are the acquisition method and licensing: digital is tied to your PlayStation Network account; physical uses the disc as the key (you can still sell or lend the disc, though the installed data stays on your console until deleted).
A later system update further blurred the lines: if a digital version is already installed (e.g., by another user on the console or via PS Plus), inserting the matching disc can let you play it without a separate disc install. Conversely, buying the digital version after a disc install can allow play without the disc inserted.
In short: The physical disc is largely an installer + license key. Once the data is on the SSD, you’re playing a digital-style installed version optimized for the console’s hardware, just like a store download. Some titles ship with incomplete data on the disc and require additional downloads, but the core principle remains the same.
