Effective immediately & until further notice, the flags at all City of Ottawa facilities have been lowered to half-mast in honour of the victims of the tragedy at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright on October 17, 2026.
The City expresses its solidarity with the Wainwright community.
Heartbreaking news emerging from Wainwright tonight. My thoughts are with the Canadian Armed Forces, their families, and the surrounding communities affected by this tragedy.
My deepest gratitude to the first responders, municipal emergency crews and everyone working tirelessly through this incredibly difficult night. Our communities stand with you.

A serious incident creating a major fire has occurred at CFB Wainwright, in Alberta.
Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected.
We are working closely with the Government of Alberta and local authorities. Premier Smith and I are in close contact as are our relevant ministers and officials.

Today’s federal announcement marks an important investment in helping Canadians lower their home energy bills and reduce emissions.
Reaching the ambition of retrofitting one million homes will mean bringing together a range of complementary solutions. Canadians also need access to affordable financing and solutions that support comprehensive home retrofits, including improvements to energy efficiency and climate resilience.
There is a significant opportunity to build on today’s measures with complementary approaches that help more households undertake deeper retrofits, mobilize additional investment and deliver lasting savings. Municipalities have an important role to play in making those solutions work for communities across Canada.
FCM looks forward to working with the federal government to turn this ambition into lasting, measurable results.

Canada is facing a nation-defining moment. Decisions being made today about sovereignty, economic strength and ambitious goals will shape our country for years to come.
Federal investments and major projects will land in communities across the country. Making those investments successful means ensuring communities are ready for the growth that comes with them.

Canada’s AI future won’t be built by governments or companies alone. It will be built in partnership with communities across the country.
Today, I met with Federation of Canadian Municipalities President Tim Tierney and municipal leaders from across Canada to discuss responsible AI data centre development and the next generation of digital infrastructure.
Because when communities help shape growth, everyone benefits. That's how we build a stronger economy, stronger communities, and a stronger Canada.
🇨🇦

Happy Independence Day to Nigeria and to Ottawa’s Nigerian community! 🇳🇬
I was honoured to join members of the Nigerian High Commission, the diplomatic community and leaders from Ottawa’s Nigerian community today as we celebrated 66 years of Nigerian independence.
Canada and Nigeria have shared diplomatic relations since 1962, but those ties are also felt right here in Ottawa through business, public service, education, arts, culture and, most importantly, community.
As Ottawa celebrates its 200th anniversary this year, it is a great opportunity to recognize the many communities that have helped shape our city and continue to be part of its future.
Congratulations on 66 years of independence, and thank you to Ottawa’s Nigerian community for everything you bring to our city.
Happy Independence Day! 🇳🇬

For 26 years, @FCM_online's @GreenMuniFund has helped communities turn ambitious ideas into tangible results.
As @berryonline, Mayor of Kitchener and Chair of the Green Municipal Fund Council, noted: “Without the existence of GMF, many communities wouldn't have access to the expertise, the dollars or, quite frankly, the resources needed to take on some of these projects.”
Guided by leaders from across the municipal, federal and private sector, the GMF Council helps ensure investments from the Government of Canada continue to deliver local action with national impact—supporting projects that build a more sustainable, competitive and resilient Canada.
