Sooooo Bishop Barron was right and +Vesco’s defenders were wrong, +Vesco sucks at his job, and we should probably put someone less compromised in such a difficult post and retire Vesco to cappuccino duty. Good to have that cleared up.
Terrific response by Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco to @BishopBarron disgraceful attack on his integrity. Vesco speaks from the Church, Barron for himself.

Australia is a textbook example of what NOT to do.
250+ firebombings. Murders. Criminal cartels taking over the nicotine market. Breakdown of society.
This is what happens when governments embrace prohibition.

Australia is going to have to roll over & give up on the ciggies/chop-chop.
Yes, I know that stings when you’re a country famous for getting its policy settings spot on, but this is a big ol’ fail.
Own it, fix it, move on.

It really pains me to admit Obama has a point because I find him pretty fucking smug and insufferable but he has a point.
Obama tonight on his Cheesecake Factory line: "They mobilized a whole of government response to that joke. Not to inflation, but to that joke. The White House even called the Secretary of the Treasury. This is the man who is in charge of the economy. The person who's supposed to be figuring out how to make your life more affordable. The guy who's supposed to be figuring out how to lower inflation. And reduce interest rates. They told him he should hold a press conference in front of the Cheesecake Factory."

Sen. @tedcruz in March: "I don't believe that what is happening in Iran will be front and center in November. If it extends that long, we've done something wildly wrong... The president said at the beginning this is going to be a matter of several weeks."

Allie was the picture of a typical 12-year-old girl—pink-and-white-striped shirt, blue jeans, and a PINK backpack, blond hair askew—the day she was taken. She later told police she thought she was meeting a 15-year-old boy, whom she’d first spoken to online and with whom she expected to be in a relationship. Instead, when Allie (whose name I’ve changed for this story, and whose image I've anonymized with @grok for this post) climbed into the black Chevy Malibu that afternoon, she found 31-year-old Brandon Britten. He drove them across three states, to his home in Independence County, Arkansas. Britten and his wife Sierra had conspired to abduct Allie, police allege, talking with her online for a month and even soliciting nude images. Upon returning home, Sierra told police, Brandon had “taken the child back into their bedroom while she slept in their young son’s bedroom.”
Back in Woodruff, North Carolina, law enforcement began a fevered hunt for Allie. They thought she had gone to Arkansas or Texas, Spartansburg County sheriff Bill Rhyne told me, but were at “a dead standstill” until they found a surveillance-camera image of Allie entering the car. They fed a description of the vehicle—they had no license plate—into Flock Safety’s license plate reader database, which can track cars based on their appearance. “Without [Flock’s] technology, we would be at a complete standstill,” Rhyne told local media.
After a few hours of combing the results, investigators found further images of Britten’s car, driving south through Alabama and into Arkansas. At 3 p.m., Spartansburg called the Independence County Sheriff’s Office; 90 minutes later, police had arrested the Brittens and recovered Allie.
“I was able to locate the minor in a back bathroom with her face and hands against the wall shaking,” Lt. Zach Rawlins wrote in a sworn statement. “After telling her who I was, the minor thanked me for coming to get her, and said she wanted her momma.”
America is gripped by a panic over Flock’s network of automated license plate readers (ALPRs), driven by stories of abusive cops and people wrongly jailed because of what critics call a creeping surveillance state.
Largely absent from this discussion are stories like Allie’s, which is not unique: dozens of other children have been returned safely to their parents thanks in part to ALPR technology.

The WHO meets in Copenhagen today to discuss Europe's health future.
Here's a lesson it should learn:
🚫 Banning nicotine products doesn't eliminate demand.
💰 It hands the market to criminals.
📉 It undermines efforts to reduce smoking.
Europe needs evidence, not ideology.

📺 “We reported events one-sidedly for years”: Serbian TV apologizes to viewers after Vučić's party loses the election
Radio Television of Vojvodina (RTV) opened its news broadcast with footage of celebrations following the Student List's election victory — scenes it had failed to show the previous evening.
“For years, we failed to fulfill our duty. We kept silent, turned a blind eye, reported events one-sidedly, and failed to ask the necessary questions. For that, we owe our viewers an apology,” news anchor Goran Eror said.
Following the controversy, RTV's acting editor-in-chief Nenad Čačić resigned.
A similar incident occurred in Hungary, where state television also apologized to viewers after Viktor Orbán's election defeat.
🎉🎉 Serbia celebrates Vučić's defeat all night — now he's warning the country about sanctions against Russia
After 14 years of Aleksandar Vučić's political dominance, his bloc has lost the snap parliamentary elections. The opposition Student List, which emerged from mass anti-government protests, has claimed victory.
According to preliminary figures from Ipsos and CeSID, the students secured around 53% of the vote, while Vučić's coalition received approximately 39%.
The former president acknowledged defeat. He estimated that the winners could secure 135–140 seats in Serbia's 250-member parliament.
But he couldn't resist issuing a warning about Russia. Vučić claimed the new government could impose sanctions on Moscow as early as March or April.
Meanwhile, Belgrade and other Serbian cities celebrated the student movement's victory throughout the night, with car horns, singing, and crowds cheering in the streets.
Final election results are still pending.

1/10 In my latest for @AIER, I argue that America already has a conception of the common good, rooted in its founding. It is ordered liberty, sustained by constitutional institutions. The real threat to that common good came from progressivism, not classical liberalism.
