A visit by TNIE to few #railway stations revealed that #Railneer bottles are slowly disappearing from the stations and trains. And are replaced by private companies. They do charge an extra amount for the bottle than the rule of charging Rs 14 per litre newindianexpress.com/states/…

For long, Chennai's trees have been neglected. A walk down the street shows how trees are abused -- from nailing to lack of breathing space. The problem starts with data. Neither do officials have data on tree genera nor a proper count @DirectorMission @tnforestdept @chennaicorp

After we wrote a story highlighting the housing and sanitation issues faced by Irular community at Nemmeli, Chengalpattu, a temporary access road is being laid. Proposals have been sent for a permanent road, and a community toilet. @xpresstn
With no usable toilets in their homes & rainwater flooding the ground around them, Irulars in Nemmeli face a dire situation. With nowhere to relieve themselves, they say they cut their food intake by half to avoid having to use the toilet, during heavy downpour. @xpresstn

Hope Hon'ble Rail Minister @AshwiniVaishnaw will look into this. Today on the Mangala 'SF' Express (12617), catering staff were seen carrying tea bags in their pants pockets before serving passengers, which unfortunately appears to be a regular phenomenon. The video was shot by the complainant, Supreme Court lawyer @pvdinesh , highlighting the urgent need to strictly enforce standard FSSAI protocols for passenger health. @RailMinIndia

A lively meeting of minds at yesterday’s jury deliberations for The @NewIndianXpress’s RamNath Goenka Sahitya Samman 2026. A pleasure to chair a spirited exchange with fellow jurors on books, ideas and the remarkable diversity of Indian writing. The difficult part, of course, is choosing among them, but we managed to achieve consensus without any volumes being flung!

Painkiller and anti-depressant tablet abuse is not a problem only in Bihar. It's an all-India problem. An inexpensive intoxicant, it is destroying many young lives from impoverished sections. Even in Tamil Nadu the seizures are increasing every year. My piece last year
EXPRESS INVESTIGATION Bihar banned alcohol. But a new drug crisis is emerging. Ten years of prohibition. An extraordinary policing effort. Every day, Bihar Police has seized an average of 8,650 litres of liquor and arrested 196 people for liquor-related crimes. Yes, that’s 196 arrests / day. No typo. Yet, beneath the crackdown on illicit alcohol, a more insidious trade is taking root. Heroin. Tablets. Pocket-sized packets. Vials. Drugs hidden in soap boxes and petticoat folds. From smuggled bottles to a booming underground drug market, Bihar’s battle with addiction is entering a dangerous new phase. An investigation by The Indian Express. indianexpress.com/article/ex…

Another pg1 story on Free Press Journal today: The five baby Orangutans found in an Odisha forest last month will be returning to Indonesia. A delegation of forest officials from the south-east asian country will be visiting India from November 22-26. The orangutans had been trafficked from that country's forests. @fpjindia @vsudarshan

Geographical and Cultural Proximity to Sri Lanka Makes Tamil Nadu Major Node of International Meth Trafficking Networks. My analysis on Page1 of @fpjindia today based on 137 kg meth seizure by DRI last week, where TVK functionary Boopalan was arrested. Meth is the second-most popular drug in Sri Lanka now: official data from their national drug control board shows that 871.1 kg of meth was seized in the first five months of 2026; in 2025, the agencies had seized 3,866 kg, second only to cannabis. There is a big fight among Sri Lankan gangsters over control of meth trade. It is also a transit point for further movement to Malaysia, Australia, NZ and Maldives. In November 2024, the Indian Coast Guard had seized 6016 kg of meth worth Rs 36,000 crore in the Andaman seas; NIA conducted follow-up searches in Chennai and Madurai two months ago. Meth is transported from the Golden Triangle and Golden Crescent through Tamil Nadu. Nagapattinam, Rameswaram and Tuticorin are the transit points. Many have made millions; a trafficker arrested in 2025 had purchased 54 shrimp farms in Nagapattinam from drug income. Do read.

My Exclusive for @fpjindia today: Ministers, officials took huge bribes for clearing industrial parks, data centre projects of multinational firms during the 2021-26 DMK regime, evidence with Enforcement Directorate (ED) shows. What the evidence alleges (pertains to specific projects, details of which I have): - Rs 27/square feet paid to minister of housing and urban development -Bribe rate card shows Rs 1.01 crore paid to obtain GOs from ministers and CMDA member secretary -Rs 5 crore to Revenue Minister for clearance under land ceiling act -Rs 2-2.5 crore to minister and DTCP officials -Rs 9 per square feet to minister and officials for Environmental Clearance and Consent to Operate (CTE) Specific instance: -For a Rs 1600 crore data centre project, Rs 1.89 crore bribe paid. Rs 1.44 crore for data centre project in Ambattur -In 2023, One DMK minister quoted additional Rs 20/square feet, halted file movement. Influential person intervened to reduce it -Collector took bribe of Rs 50 lakh -Bribes paid by multinational firms through consultants who transfer to middlemen, who then give cash to ministers/officials. 'Supreme Account' name of one middleman/his account -Chennai-builder paid Rs 25 lakh bribe to Prohibition and Excise minister for starting a resto-bar How did ED find this evidence? They stumbled upon it while probing a hawala case of a middleman who facilitated clearances for these firms. DMK's view: - Can't comment till any official statement from ED comes -Then housing minister S Muthusamy denies all allegations. @vsudarshan
