It’s similar in all counties, the modern game needs stickmen and ball players at every level of the field and at underage, one quality player at 11 can win games.
That same player could be 2,5 or 7 as opposed to 11.
Then again every young lad wants to be a scoring forward.
Cork Hurling: Why aren't there more U20 All-Ireland winners featuring in defence?
From the successful underage teams this decade, only Eoin Downey and Ciarán Joyce have become established backs. It's why Damien Cahalane's departure leaves a vacancy.

The Cashel v Thurles game was an excellent watch.
It’s real competition for places in minor and u20 panels.
Unsure if any one Tipp school is at the standard from last year’s Harty final yet.
In today's group stage acion of the Dr Harty Cup, Cashel Community School beat Thurles CBS whilst Nenagh CBS were held to a draw and Our Lady's Templemore were beaten by CBC Cork...

What a legend for Tipperary.
Winner in 2016, 2019 & 2025. Started two and came on in 2025 to help keep Cork forwards quiet when O’Mara came off injured.
In terms of South Tipp hurling - he is right up there with Kelly, Leahy, Bubbles, Roche, Donie and Curran.

Never forget that Clare went scoreless for 15 mins at the end of the game vs limerick and this man was watching from home.
Both Cork teams go out in Munster and would both be disappointed with the performance levels.
St Mary’s physically controlled Ballincollig while Inagh Kilnamona looked the more composed side against the Glen.
Seamus Kennedy and Peter McGarry very strong from a Tipp standpoint
Best of luck to St Mary’s.
It’s been a historic season for this team with the South Final win alongside promotion to Dan Breen.
However their journey continues in the Munster championship today.
Kennedy at 6 and McGarry at 11 will be key but Cagney is a serious scoring threat.

In the history of the game of hurling only three players have won the Hurler of the Year award without making the final.
Tony Browne (1998)
Dan Shanahan (2007)
Austin Gleeson (2016)
I have my own thought but what are yours?
It’s cool the way he talks about the history of the game and the history of the award.
Gillane, Hegarty and Lynch.
Name a better grouping of three forwards in any team all time?
“Building a house, getting married, winning the All-Ireland…” 🏆
Some year for Gearóid Hegarty! And now, to top it all off, he’s been crowned the 2026 PwC GAA GPA Hurler of the Year! 🔥 #PwCAllStars
Some game. The u21 championship has been value for the money so far.
Will bang the Robbie Ryan drum until January.

All I could think watching Hegarty win the 2nd HOTY was how Callanan was robbed in 2016.
0-13 in the All Ireland final with 0-9 from play and no wides. Against Cody.
1-11 in the Munster final with 1-5 from play while Aussie was shut down.
Massive robbery.
Think this is far too based towards centre backs.
Then again 6 dominates the club game.
In this weeks Nenagh Guardian, we revealed our Tipperary Senior Club Hurling Team of the Year with the nominators also selected Thurles Sarsfields captain Conor Stakelum as Player of the Year.

No county is persistently optimistic quite like Tipp.
Really good display last night and plenty games across Harty, Fitzgibbon and remaining club games for young players to show their skill ahead of January.
Tipp senior player and JK Brackens U21 manager Andrew Ormond says the younger players in Tipp are driving up the standard of hurling in the county tippfm.com/sport/gaa/hurling… via @TippFM
One of the form forwards in Tipp.
Best player on the Holycross team this year.
Plays in such a mature way for a player so young.
Robbie Ryan giving the keeper no chance🚀
The @ul_gaa inside forward line is in red-hot form tonight!🔥

This kid has something special about him. Will be great to watch him develop in the minor team.
IT'S THE KJ DUNNE SHOW IN KILMALLOCK!!!⭐👑
A first-half hat-trick for the young greyhound! He is causing chaos in the Midleton defence

Is it selfish to look at this and ask how we can get more club games in Tipp?

Thurles just dominant defensively.
Conor Stakelum played the perfect game. Maher a rock at the back.
Crazy part is that I think they can hurl way better than that.
But a Dan Breen win is a Dan Breen win 🏆
St Marys with a historic year and back to the top table of Tipp hurling.
South champions for the first time in 40 odd years.
Now they’ve done the double and could go further in the all Ireland series.
Cagney and McGarry with 9 points from play but their work rate top class.
That Arravale Rovers v Ballingarry game was unbelievable.
The score for score exchange at the end was insane.
Tipp town the best town tonight.
Jack Cahill and Dylan Walsh were superb in defeat.
Johnny Ryan will have a statue built after that.
I would argue that a double header for the Intermediate and Prem Intermediate on Saturday and then a standalone senior final would be better.
We can officially call the Mid the best division in Tipp.
The North are no longer at that level.
