I slept with my wife’s divorce lawyer’s assistant for three months, never realizing she was quietly helping my wife prepare to leave me. My wife and I had been married for seven years, but our marriage had become miserable. We argued constantly, barely spoke to each other, and she had started mentioning divorce. I didn’t want our marriage to end, so when she suggested we get professional help, I agreed. A few weeks later, I met Vanessa at a business networking event. She worked at a law firm and told me she handled client appointments and legal paperwork. We exchanged numbers, and our conversations gradually became personal. She knew I was having problems at home. She listened whenever I complained about my wife, and she made me feel wanted again. One evening, after we had dinner together, we ended up sleeping together. It became a secret relationship that lasted three months. Vanessa never asked me for money or expensive gifts. She only wanted to see me whenever we could find time alone. Then one afternoon, she asked me a strange question. “If your wife ever filed for divorce, would you fight to keep the house?” I laughed and asked why she was asking. She said she was simply curious because she worked around divorce cases. I didn’t think much of it. A week later, my wife asked me to sign some documents concerning our house. I refused because I wanted my lawyer to examine them first. That evening, Vanessa called and asked whether I had signed anything. I immediately became suspicious. I asked how she knew about the documents. There was a long silence before she admitted that my wife had visited her office several times. I demanded an explanation. Vanessa finally told me that my wife had hired her firm’s senior solicitor to handle a divorce consultation. Vanessa had been the person arranging the appointments and preparing the paperwork. I felt sick. I asked whether my wife knew about our affair. Vanessa said she didn’t know, but she had started feeling guilty because she knew my marriage was already in trouble. I went home and confronted my wife. She looked at me calmly and said, “I know about Vanessa.” I couldn’t speak. Then she explained that she had discovered our affair through a hotel receipt in my car. She had contacted Vanessa’s firm because she wanted legal advice before confronting me. But she had never asked Vanessa to get close to me. Vanessa had made that decision herself. My wife then showed me the final message Vanessa had sent her that morning. It read: “I think your husband is going to find out that I work with your solicitor. I’m sorry. I should have told you everything.” My wife looked at me and said: “You thought you were having an affair with someone who understood your marriage. You were actually sleeping with someone who knew exactly how much damage she could cause.” I lost my marriage, but the part I still cannot understand is why Vanessa risked her career and reputation to get involved with a married man whose divorce case was already being prepared.
