Sept 28 marks Tuskulėnai Victims Remembrance Day in Lithuania. Between 1944 and 1947, 767 people were executed by the Soviet repressive regime in Vilnius, with many secretly buried at Tuskulėnai. Today, we honour their memory and preserve their stories.

On June 15 in 1940, the USSR occupied Lithuania. The USSR did not care about international treaties. Deportations, murders, and terrors followed for the next 50 years. Russia took on USSR's legacy, waging wars against its neighbours, yet to be contained.

May 1945 did not mean the end of the war for Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. The USSR occupied us, used armed force to crush the efforts to restore the statehood, and attempted to distort history, hiding crimes. Such "liberators" are called occupiers. #WordsMatter #HistoryMatters

Today, Ukraine honoured a hero from Lithuania. A memorial ceremony was held in Kyiv for our citizen Tomas Valentėlis, who fell whilst fighting for Ukraine. The Ukrainian fight is our shared European struggle. Ukraine’s freedom is our freedom.
