10/26/85 #WorldSeries Game 6: Danny Cox (18-9, 2.88) and the St. Louis Cardinals take a 3-2 lead back to Kansas City where they face Charlie Leibrandt (17-9, 2.69) and the Royals. Both pitchers throw shutout ball through seven innings. With two on and two out in the top of the eighth, pinch hitter Brian Harper breaks a 0-0 tie (video below). Ken Dayley pitches a scoreless eighth in relief, and the Cards go to the ninth with a chance to win the Series. Despite losing All Star closer Bruce Sutter in the offseason, the Redbirds hadn’t lost a single ninth inning lead all season long. You most likely already know what happened in the ninth on this night, but just in case you (for some inexplicable reason) want to see, here’s the video: youtu.be/5iL_W9MucEk And here’s the #FullGameVideo: youtu.be/8PsRhG03IIc?si=QY5n… #StLCards #ForTheLou #FountainsUp

Willie McGee gave Kirby Puckett a taste of his own medicine in Game 7 of the World Series on this date in 1987, preserving an early 2-1 Cardinals lead. A hit would have been Kirby's sixth straight, tying the World Series record. (Kirby tied the game with a double in the 5th.)

Mike Caldwell on the mound in Game 1 of the 1982 World Series — Busch Stadium, St. Louis, October 12, 1982. (Photo by John Iacono, Sports Illustrated) The '82 Brewers — Harvey's Wallbangers — opened their first World Series with a rout, and Caldwell was untouchable: a three-hit shutout in a 10-0 win, while Paul Molitor collected five hits and Robin Yount four. Milwaukee pushed St. Louis all the way to a seventh game before falling. For 44 years that pennant stood alone in Brewers history — until now. This year's Brewers swept the Dodgers to win the National League pennant, and tomorrow night they open the World Series against Tampa Bay, still hunting the first title in franchise history. Caldwell's Game 1 remains the standard they're chasing. ⚾ 44 years later — do the Brewers finish it this time? 👇️

Don Sutton stands in the downpour at Busch Stadium — Game 6 of the 1982 World Series, St. Louis, October 19, 1982. The game was stopped twice by rain on a miserable night, and nothing went Milwaukee's way in between: Sutton, the veteran the Brewers had traded for in August to win exactly these games, was driven out early as St. Louis romped 13-1 to force a seventh game. Nine days earlier Sutton had won the pennant clincher against California; this time he could only stand in the rain and watch the Series slide toward its deciding night — which the Cardinals won the next evening, too. ⚾ Should a World Series game ever be played through a night like that? 👇️

#OTDin1985 The #StLCards push their lead in the #WorldSeries to 3-1 behind a gem from ace, John Tudor…
10/23/85 1985 World Series Game 4 In a matchup of southpaws, Bud Black (10-15) and the Kansas City Royals visit John Tudor (21-8) and the St. Louis Cardinals. With the Redbirds up two games to one, they turn to their ace on three days rest. As Tim McCarver notes in the extended highlight package below, that has not been a strain on Tudor so far this season. The Cards strike first when Tito Landrum homers in the second. Willie McGee follows that up with a long ball of his own in the third, and given the way Tudor has pitched all season, that may be enough. In the fifth, Terry Pendleton triples, and then the chess match begins for Howser & Herzog. After a squeeze attempt bunted foul on one pitch and a pitchout on another, the count eventually goes full. Herzog puts the squeeze back on and it is successful as Black throws home wild. The Runnin’ Redbirds try to tack on another in the eighth when McGee nearly scores from second on a wild pitch, but is retired at home and Herr is nearly caught advancing to third. Meanwhile, Tudor is masterful. He finishes up with a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the first shutout in World Series play since Bob Gibson in 1968. The Cards lead the Series 3-1, and are just one win away… #FullGameVideo: youtu.be/gwLfCUWn_vA?si=bfNV… #ForTheLou #StLCards #FountainsUp
