Lot of high profile hacks lately in japan. Not sure if this is happening as much in other countries, if it’s just hot news, or if it’s really a targeted thing.

yikes
Reese's Pieces have no chocolate in them. The peanuts had their oil pressed out and a cheaper fat put back in.
Sugar is first, then partially defatted peanuts, then hydrogenated palm kernel and soybean oil, then corn syrup solids. Everything after that is 2% or less, and it's the dyes, the glaze, some vanillin and a little milk. There's no cocoa anywhere.
Partially defatted just means the peanuts went through a press. The peanut oil comes out one side and gets sold as peanut oil. What's left is a dry peanut flour, and that's what the center is made from, because flour holds a shape in a panning drum and doesn't go rancid. Then they put fat back in, and the fat they picked is hydrogenated palm kernel oil, which is solid at room temperature and costs less than peanut oil. You can see the swap on the panel. 38 pieces have 6 g of fat and all 6 are saturated. Peanut oil is mostly unsaturated, so that number isn't the peanut.
The shell is sugar with 4 dyes and a coat of shellac.

Hidden in plain sight.
80s developers often went beyond what was generally accepted as a system's limit. They were true pioneers, pushing systems way beyond their initial hardware restrictions.
Geoff Crammond is probably best known for his stroke of genius when designing the Formula One Grand Prix games. However, his talent was visible much earlier when his game Revs (1985) was released.
The most remarkable thing about it was how it hid code in the sky and used extreme memory-packing tricks on a 32KB 8-bit machine. Because of the BBC Micro’s memory limits, Crammond stored part of the actual game code inside the screen memory area.
Normally this would show up as garbage pixels. Instead, he used timer-based palette tricks so those “garbage code pixels” were forced to blue. They disappeared into the sky and became invisible during play. This is the famous “code in the sky” technique.
Revs is widely regarded as a landmark of 8-bit programming efficiency and a key ancestor of modern sim racing.

The Greenland shark can live for over 400 years
It lives in cold artic waters and has an amazingly slow metabolism. A big 200kg shark can survive on a few hundred grams of food a day!
Chap on train watching reels about Bangladeshi 🇧🇩 politics. Body language, intensity of stare tells me he’s fired up. Seen him a few times, he’s short and as we’re both standing next to each other I can see it.
Got me curious so googled couple of the activists he’s watching…
What are some of the choke points on semiconductors. Why can’t china or any other country build its own advanced chips?
Semiconductors are a lock with 8 keys
ETCH and deposition machines, thermal processing: the technology that scrapes away the unwanted material, adding new material, heat treats it. American and Japanese companies control this.
Photomask & inspection: the template that prints the chip. Japan companies control it.

Ppl used to read paper maps, navigate w/o tech. Nowadays you see them lost within few meters of the place they look for. Taxi drivers are staring at GPS map oblivious to landmarks.
And yes, no one is asking for directions anymore. Strange world.
Japan 🇯🇵 GDP: forecast to be increasing purely from AI and automation…. Gains are a mix of total factor productivity increase, and capital deepening. In other words, more being done more efficiently more capital with fewer or same workers.
That’s good!
Something we don’t do any more in the age of smartphones and AI. We used to, even up to what seems only a few years back, stop and help people who looked a bit lost or confused with directions. It was one of the cool little things that would brighten both people’s day.
