A model of CAS's inflatable space habitat module designed specifically for in-orbit manufacturing.
CAS is pulling off something unprecedented for an academic institution: building a self-contained, vertically integrated spaceflight ecosystem. Spanning suborbital and orbital launch vehicles, advanced space probes, cargo spacecrafts and space lab modules, CAS's capability of controlling the entire pipeline is forming.
CAS-SPACE is targeting Q1 2027 for the maiden flight of its reusable suborbital flight system, Lihong-2, carrying automated space pharmaceutical payloads.
The orbital-class Lihong-3 is slated to follow in 2028, designed to host at least 300 kg of in-space manufacturing payloads in microgravity for up to 1 full year before returning to Earth.
This is actually a lot more realistic than the nuclear power plants Russia intends to “build” in Africa, i can see a couple dozen Russian ships supplying electricity to coastal African countries in a decade or two. Probably even more profitable than building actual plants on land
