The Archdiocese of New York and attorneys for about 1,300 parishioners who said they were sexually abused by clergy have agreed to an $800 million settlement of their legal claims, the second-largest involving a Catholic archdiocese in the US cnn.it/3W8aEKP
⚫️ IICSA (England & Wales inquiry 2022): child sex offenders use their standing as respected, trusted members of institutions to enable access to children.
⚫️ CIASE (French public inquiry, 2021): predatory clergy actively seek roles in ministry that enable access to children.
Jeffrey Donaldson was twice UK delegate to children’s rights group @thetimes reports.
In 2013, he rose in the parliamentary assembly of the Council of Europe to say that people who profited from the “misery and suffering of children” were “absolutely repugnant and inhuman”.

‼️Jeffrey Donaldson a Paedophile and sexual predator...the Former N. Ireland DUP leader and DUP Westminster MP was appointed twice to be the UK delegate to "Children's Rights" group?‼️Seriously!! A full independent parliamentary Inquiry must be set up immediately! @TonyGribben3
Power, authority & public trust are exploited by politicians and priests to meet perverse sexual interests. A first response to calls for accountability of churches & government is to deny sexual abuse & delay investigation. Meanwhile, the abusers thrive.

I always fall behind those who speak out when powerful institutions would rather cover-up. The Rev Bill Atkins deserved to be heard. And his friend, Rev Barry Reid still deserves fairness, dignity & a proper examination of the questions surrounding his case.
Sorry to hear about Rev Bill Atkins’ sudden death. When I interviewed him for @BelTel he was warm and genuine about seeking justice for his friend, the late Rev Barry Reid, who he believed was unfairly treated by the Presbyterian Church
Powerful priests. Powerful politicians. Reputations protected while children suffered abuse. When religious authority & political power shield individuals from scrutiny, accountability is evaded and survivors are silenced. NI government must move forward with statutory inquiry.
Message up north would be less grandma/grandpa but more priests and politicians.
Consent ad controversy: Using Ireland's poor grannies and grandads to explain children’s boundaries was probably a misstep, but the message still matters...

Scary.

The loudest preachers of Christian morality often have the most to prove. Watch every self-righteous, right-wing, religiously active politician closely -hypocrisy has a habit of catching up with those who preach virtue to others. #Hypocrisy #JeffreyDonaldson #gaysauna #childrape

Telling grandparents not to hug their grandchildren? Surely a better recommendation would be to teach children about safe & unsafe behaviour from EVERYONE, including priests and other authority figures. Protect children, but don’t make innocent family affection the enemy. 🇮🇪
Government scrambles to distance itself from ad telling grandparents not to hug grandchildren buff.ly/UvnhxsJ
Survivors of child sexual abuse have written to the UK’s Parliamentary Standards Commissioner recommending an independent, parliamentary inquiry into the rape allegation on the Westminster estate, including wider sexual assault allegations. against former MP, Jeffrey Donaldson,

The Church of England faces tough financial choices, but safeguarding is not optional. It protects people, drives learning and builds trust. Financial pressures are real, but sustained investment in skilled safeguarding must remain a priority.

Donaldson story increasingly Savilesque. Hypocrisy is chilling. Along the way he apparently groomed Teresa May & Jeremy Cornyn. Donaldson was on the loose for too long. Commons Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards must establish an independent parliamentary inquiry.

On 6 Nov, 2017 Donaldson was photographed with Teresa May, labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and other MPs during a meeting to discuss forming a common policy on tackling abuse in British politics following allegations of sexual harassment at Westminster.
Serious questions accumulating on mandate & effectiveness of the Irish Catholic Church’s Safeguarding Board. Clear evidence of cover-up of recent safeguarding failures including collusion by Northern Ireland Safeguarding Board. @safeguardingni @newrycathedral @CatholicBishops
Transparency now needed. Questions for Irish Catholic Church & its safeguarding board:
a) what procedure was followed after complaints of predatory behaviour to two priests?
b) how was each complaint recorded? If not, why not?
c) who were the priests receiving the complaints?

All these ‘open secrets’ 🤬
I’d say when you’re sent to Belize fir to set s’thing new up - the church knew & we’re relocating the problem.

More questions for Irish Catholic Church & Diocese of Derry on convicted paedo-priest as details emerge of Church apparently having no record of ‘grooming’ complaints made in the late 1990s. Concerns made to two priests by a seminarian. @CatholicBishops @dioceseofderry
Update on Irish Catholic priest caught up in paedophile sting operation. Complaints had already been made to Church about his sexual interest in younger seminarians. But nothing done. irishnews.com/news/northern-…
