The lowest point of land in Britain is a cast-iron post in a Cambridgeshire wood, and when it went in the ground it was level with the ground. Stand next to it now and it is four metres over your head. It is at Holme Fen, south of Peterborough, and in 1851 this was the edge of Whittlesey Mere, the largest lake in southern England. A syndicate of landowners drained the lake that year for farmland, and the engineer, who knew what happens to peat when you take the water out of it, drove an oak pile through 22 feet of it down to the clay and cut the top flush with the turf. A column from the Crystal Palace replaced it. Then they stood back and watched the land go down. Nine inches in the first year. Eight feet by the 1890s. Today the ground around that post is 2.75 metres below sea level, and the post is a ruler nobody asked for, sticking out of a birch wood with guy ropes holding it up because the soil that used to hold it up has gone into the sky. That is what drained peat does. It dries, it shrinks, and it oxidises, which means it turns into carbon dioxide and leaves. Peat takes a thousand years to lay down a metre. Under the plough it loses a centimetre or two of that every year, and the Fens have been under the plough since the Dutch engineers arrived in the 1600s. Peat soils farmed for crops are among the largest sources of carbon dioxide in Britain's whole land sector, and the fields doing it are growing lettuce. Because that is what the Fens are for. A third of England's vegetables come out of this one flat black square: half the lettuce grown in Britain, three quarters of the celery, the carrots, the onions, the potatoes, the leeks, the beetroot. The bag of salad, the celery sticks, the chips. Every field of it is a few millimetres lower than it was last January, the pumps run day and night to keep the sea out of a landscape that is now beneath it, and the water the crops need is forecast to run short within ten years. Before the drain this was eels, wildfowl, reeds, summer grazing, and a fen that had been quietly stacking carbon since the ice left. The cattle came and went on it for 5,000 years and the ground stayed where it was. The salad has been on it for 170 years and the ground is four metres down. The post is still measuring.

The chance to keep global warming below 1.5°C with no overshoot is gone. But urgent action can still limit the overshoot and bring warming back to 1.5°C by 2100. Current policies, however, put the 🌎 on course for up to 2.8°C this century. New #EmissionsGap Report: unep.org/en/news-and-stories…

I wonder to what extent the argument over the reality of human-induced global heating might be an issue that Russia would seek to divide societies & polarise opinion over? There used to be broad consensus, & now there isn’t & that shift didn’t come from nowhere.
There is a lot of Russian propaganda in Europe. They have invested as much money in it as in weapons during this war. This is a massive financial program spanning decades. Russia has been waging a hybrid war against Europe, including Italy, France, Britain, and Germany, for a long time. It just isn't waging a full-scale war against them as it is against us. Because we had the same thing – a hybrid war. Russian narratives across absolutely all television and media platforms, on the internet, and on social media. People should not be pierced through and brainwashed by waves of narratives from the Russian Federation. Because it is up to France, Ukraine, Italy, and Spain to decide how to live and whom to elect. Russia cannot influence Italy's choices and freedom. Italy is a free country, just like Ukraine. The Russians will seek to exploit far-right movements, religious movements, faith, migration, and gender. Russia doesn't care what issue can divide society: from religion to language, Russia will always find it and strike there. We are seeing this now not only in Europe – they also have influence in the United States of America. They have a very significant wave going on there, and their network is operating. From an interview with Corriere della Sera. (3/3)

A few months ago this post raising climate change would have attracted a lot of angry pushback. Today not so much. Was I getting comments mainly from bots in Russia, & which have since been taken out by Ukrainian strikes?

Great piece by Tom Harris on cloud feedback The world's cloud cover is reducing, which makes the planet hotter This may be why Miocene Climatic Optimum temperatures were 7 - 8C up on pre-industrial for CO2 levels of just 400 - 600ppm Very, very, scary substack.com/home/post/p-220…

Speak to any hard-bitten older farmer around me in Somerset, or anywhere in Britain, and they will tell you that they grew up among fields teeming with corncrakes, grass snakes, hares, hedges full of yellowhammers and other songbirds, car windscreens splattered with bugs after the shortest summer drive, nearly all now gone. 98% of wildflowers, gone. Huge shoals of herring, cod, and other fish in the sea, a distant memory. Across almost every indicator, the losses during just one human lifetime have been catastrophic. The data is all there, as are the anecdotes. Britain is among the most nature-depleted countries on earth.
We are not the most nature depleted country. That's just a myth. We are one of the most human altered countries, i.e. one with the least amount of truly wild places. Our biodiversity is actually quite high for a small country, partly as a result of human intervention.

Ocean acidification, ie reduction in alkalinity, is a serious issue among the planetary boundaries we are crossing. When pH drops below 8,0 the amount of free carbonate ions is reduced, with more biocarbonates instead. Why is this important? Bicarbonates are water soluble, whereas carbonates are not. Many life forms, including shellfish, crabs and the likes have carbonate crusts and these will not be formed when pH drops below 8,0 Coccolithophores are an example of carbonaceous plankton that play a key role in ocean oxygen production, they also sink rapidly sequestering carbon into the sediment, they reflect sunlight due to their white carbonate crust and when they die, they release DMSP, precursor to aerosols supporting cloud formation and albedo, cooling the Earth through increased whiteness, shadow and rain. And they are food for krill, fish, whales, crabs.. Coccolithophores account for about 10% of total global phytoplankton biomass. They also account for roughly 10% to 20% of all marine primary production (organic carbon fixation) in the world's oceans. That us now at risk with ocean acidification. This is one of the reasons why Oceanry is working on promoting ocean iron replenishment research. At the same time, we must reduce emissions, restore and conserve the ocean. Peregrine soaring around the spire of Leicester Cathedral just now (see it?). What an amazing recovery these birds have made. Comes down to the excellent science undertaken by Britain’s Nature agency back in the 60s & 70s & the ban on DDT which followed. Evidence->action->result.

The FT reports today that intelligence agencies from five European countries are warning that the Kremlin is stepping up assassination, sabotage and other covert operations against European civilian targets. Defence company executives, including people involved in drone production, are being warned that they may be targets. Germany’s domestic intelligence chief told lawmakers that Russia is deliberately planning violence against individuals through state or state-controlled actors, including by using organised crime networks. European defence executives have already increased their personal protection, while some suspected plots have reportedly been disrupted. And the objective is not simply to kill people. One intelligence official told the FT that the psychological effect is itself part of the operation: make executives frightened enough that they think twice about supplying or doing business with Ukraine. This is what we have consistently failed to understand about Putin. For years we treated Russian aggression as something happening somewhere else: Georgia, Crimea, Ukraine, cyber attacks, disinformation, political interference. Now European intelligence services are warning of assassination plots on European soil. Back in 2022, Britain’s former defence attaché in Moscow, Air Commodore Carl Scott, said the warnings about Putin had been there for years and that Britain’s departure from the EU had “greatly emboldened those in Moscow.” Four years later, Europe is having to defend not only its borders but its businesses, infrastructure and people against Russian hybrid warfare. Putin understood long ago that weakening Europe did not necessarily require defeating NATO armies. It required division, intimidation and fear. That is why European unity is not an abstract political project anymore. It is a national security necessity.

The Bureau of Land Management approved blasting through 100-foot canyon walls at the entrance to the world's longest art gallery. So oil tankers can drive through it. Nine Mile Canyon, Utah holds more than 10,000 cultural, historical and archaeological resources, including over 1,000 known rock art sites containing more than 10,000 individual images. People have used this canyon for at least 8,000 years. The blasting happens in Gate Canyon, the entrance corridor into that gallery. Federal surveys have already found 47 historic sites along this one stretch of road alone. And it's not only the rock art. Threatened Mexican spotted owls use cliff habitat in the canyon, including areas near the proposed blasting. BLM did the minimum environmental review required and barreled ahead anyway, to move oil out of the Uinta Basin faster. Up to 1,000 vehicles a day, roughly half of them heavy tankers. This isn't BLM's first swing at this road. Duchesne County tried the same realignment in 2015 and again in 2022. Both times, public opposition killed it. This time, BLM posted it quietly in March with no public notice, denied conservation groups' request to even weigh in, and approved it in April anyway. It's the same playbook that just got this administration stopped at Big Bend National Park, except "stopped" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. There, a judge halted construction October 2nd, but only after bulldozers had already torn through the park’s grounds. A win in court doesn't un-crush what's already crushed. Three groups sued over Gate Canyon this week. But a lawsuit takes months. A blasting crew takes days. #DemsUnited 🧵

Imagine a smoke alarm that has been screaming for decades, while the people in the house argue about whether there’s really a fire. The room gets hotter. The smoke gets thicker. The noise gets louder. And instead of putting out the fire, they insist the alarm is lying, blame the people who installed it and argue that the house has always been this hot. That is climate denial.
