Seventeen-year-old Sybylla Melvyn wants to become a writer in rural Australia around 1900. Her family expects her to find a husband and settle down, while she wants to choose her own future.
The adaptation race-swaps Harry, the book’s white love interest, into a Chinese-Australian man, adds a gay storyline, and turns his elderly aunts into one suffragette character.
Gender barriers, racism, and gay acceptance become major, recurring stories, with Aboriginal sisters Nell and Betty getting their own struggles alongside Sybylla’s romance.
Marriage and family duties are repeatedly framed as things holding Sybylla back from writing.
The creators’ feminist and LGBTQ advocacy fits these changes, while producer Paul Ranford’s past work includes refugee detention and colonisation stories.
Creator Liz Doran openly describes the added Chinese, Aboriginal, and gay representation as a way to update the book for modern viewers.
Sybylla also delivers repeated speeches about different rules for men and women, including men treating women as possessions and women writers facing a double standard.
Viewers on X and Reddit have complained about the changed characters and added identity stories, and published criticism makes similar complaints.

Prendo il numeretto e mi metto ad aspettare. Nessuno mi chiama. Gli sportellisti fermi a non fare un cazzo, a guardare il vuoto.
Alle 13:20 mi rompo le scatole e mi avvicino io allo sportello. La tipa mi guarda pure scocciata: "Eh ma è tardi, sono le 13:20 e noi alle 13:35 chiudiamo". Io convinto chiudessero alle 14 gentilmente gli dico che mancano ancora 15 minuti. Gli spiego che sono riuscito a portare mia mamma finalmente ma nulla, per loro era tardi.
Ecco il capolavoro del posto fisso con il culo al caldo: zero voglia di fare, arroganza a palate e zero rispetto per i cittadini. Però per fare sciopero ogni maledetto venerdì per allungarsi il weekend i diritti se li ricordano benissimo.
Siete l'imbarazzo del Paese. Andate a lavorare se ne avete voglia.

The N64 port of Resident Evil 2 crammed two full discs' worth of PlayStation game onto a single 64MB cartridge, which sounds impossible given the original shipped on two CDs with full-motion video. Angel Studios (later Rockstar San Diego) pulled it off with custom compression tech that shrank the data massively, and they even replaced the FMV cutscenes with compressed in-engine style sequences.
