What’s it like for a normal hack golfer to play Augusta National? 2 years ago I got the unbelievable honor of playing the home of the Masters with a member. I still pinch myself. So what did I shoot? Let me take you on a hole by hole journey from the member tees:

The last couple years Scottie and Wyndham have averaged about 64 on this course at the Byron Nelson. Guess my score as an 8 handicap? Par 72 for us plebes, par 71 for the pros.

I’ve never owned a Scotty Cameron putter. 27 years of golf. I’m guessing I’ve purchased 15 putters. Never a Scotty. Have purchased a Bettinardi (current stick) and a LAB, so price isn’t the problem. Just never putted with one and felt like it was my Excalibur.
SCOTTY CAMERON NOW LETS YOU CUSTOMIZE YOUR PUTTER BEFORE IT EVEN SHIPS 🚨🚨⛳️🔥 CUSTOM STAMPS, PAINT FILL, GRIPS, HEADCOVERS AND MORE 🎨🔴👑 ANOTHER TERRIBLE DEVELOPMENT FOR MY BANK ACCOUNT 😭💸💸💀😂

What’s crazy to me is that a Scotty used to be rare. A super expensive tool for dudes with money. Now I see them everywhere.

Candyroot Lodge: Course One 2026 - Mike Koprowski Public The Southern Sandhills has been booming with amazing new golf courses. But with a problem, most of the new golf courses built are private clubs. Candyroot is going to change that in a big way. Course One is open for preview play and is making a splash. Mike is fresh off his super well reviewed Broomsedge Golf Club and he actually had a tough challenge: Build a golf course down the road that somehow feels different. Not only does it feel different, somehow it doesn’t even feel like the same designer. It’s a totally different golf course. Candyroot is a big and bold golf course. He did not follow the common modern themes. It’s not overly wide. It’s not an easy walk. You won’t always find your golf ball. This is not a place to build up your self esteem. It’s a test of golf. The land has the sandy soil that we are used to in the region. But the movement is more dramatic than most. There are no flat golf holes and you have to think about the fairway slopes before you hit your drives. If you play a fade into a big left to right sloping fairway, you might be in trouble. (And vice versa.) Mike had some tough decisions with how many blind tee shots he wanted. The land calls for them, he would have had to bulldoze a lot of dirt to get rid of some. He chose to keep them and it adds a thrill to so many holes. You will have to trust your caddie to know which line to take many times and that’s rare at a resort golf course. It’s clear he is not adverse to taking risks. The greens are also not typical modern giant landing areas. Many are very small, you are expected to hit good approach shots and to choose targets where your misses are okay. The green surrounds have some very steep run offs, your short game will be tested with some testy chips off of tight lies. If you miss and hit the slopes, your ball can bounce and release a long way. There are some other unique choices made in the design. Back to back 3 tough par 5’s. (Including a 700 yard hole from the tips!) A par 4 with multiple greens, leading into a par 3 with alternate tee boxes! On the longest par 5, the green is shockingly small. Yet it works. So how is the golf course overall? Incredible. It’s the kind of bold and new design that we can use more of. It’s very hard, but in the creative way that makes you want to try again and again. Each play will unlock more secrets, you aren’t going to figure it out after one play. (I sure didn’t.) You will need to gain confidence in your driving lines and that won’t come easy. The small greens means learning where to miss and that’s not always obvious. It’s an ode to where golf came from. It’s not always supposed to be right in front of you and you aren’t always supposed to beat the golf course. But when you do post a score here, it will really mean something. It’s challenging but also super fun, which is hard to achieve. Candyroot is a home run.

Course One is the first of many at Candyroot. The plans are for multiple 18 hole golf courses, a short course co-designed by Michelle Wie, and lodging. It’s just an hour from Charlotte and will one of the easiest golf resorts to access for the midwest and east coast. This place is going to be rocking. Go follow @candyrootlodge to stay in the know. The next round of Preview Play tee times go on sale soon!

How much has your local golf course gone up in price in the last 6 years? My old local haunt is $90 now on weekdays. Was $50. This isn’t about destination golf or high end golf. Those are luxuries, they will always be pricey. But in many markets, normal golf courses are now over $100 to play. $100 to play residential golf is insane. $100 to play a 5 hour round with mediocre conditions is just rough. But…costs for golf course owners have gone crazy. Labor is crazy. Repairing anything is crazy. In many markets water and power costs have gone up huge amounts. Municipal golf is the last place where $50 rounds seem possible in most cities.
A guy on Reddit compared greens fees at three courses he played in 2019 versus 2026: $63 ➡️ $115 $56 ➡️ $132 $52 ➡️ $126 Apparently #GROWTHEGAME also meant growing the greens fees 😭😭😭💸⛳️ #SHRINK

Broomsedge Golf Club 2024 - Mike Koprowski & Kyle Franz Private with limited public tee times The hype around this South Carolina sand hills course has been high. Could it live up to the hype? The answer is a clear YES. With so many new projects being built on similar land with similar settings, it is hard to stand out. But the designers did a great job of working with the land to create something that just feels different. It has all the tenets of modern golf design that are common. Walking only, firm turf, wide fairways, ground game emphasis, bold green slopes. So what makes it feel different? It always starts with the land. The sandy soil moves up and down, with big natural swales to create lots of ground movement. The 2nd hole is a modern masterpiece, influenced by the famous 6th hole at Eastward Ho!. With a giant slope that would be considered too bold for many, it provides multiple routes and rewards for your drive. Options are a big part of Broomsedge. This includes two holes that have 2 separate greens that can make the holes play completely different day to day. The routing also has some interesting quirks. There are back to back par 3’s, only 2 par 5’s, and 3 par 3’s on the front! The designers believe that finding the best holes is more important than finding a “typical” hole routing. Including a run of 6 par 4’s on the back 9. The turf is wonderful. The greens were fast and firm, but could also receive a spinning shot. The fairways are firm, but not overly fast. This provides added challenge, because you end up with many non-flat lies. The aesthetic here just works. The broomsedge and natural grasses border every hole really make the golf course just very pleasing to the eye. That said, the gunch is real and you will be punished when you miss the wide fairways. (As you should be.) The postage stamp 8th hole is an ode to Royal Troon and plays only around 100 yards. It’s devilish and you will see lots of birdies and doubles, anything can happen. Broomsedge is an excellent addition to the golf scene and should attract visitors from everywhere. Be sure to add it to your Carolina golf trip!

One of the unique things about this private club is the UK model of access. Anyone can submit a request to play and if accepted can get a chance to visit this wonderful course. I hope this becomes a trend, as a few clubs are starting to do this more.

What’s the best 36 hole day in golf? Rule: Max 20 minute drive between courses. Pebble Beach and Cypress is the clear #1. (First tee time at Pebble a must.) Other contenders: Royal Melbourne/Kingston Heath Sunningdale 36 Old Course/Kingsbarns What else?

Eugenio Chacarra now is leading the DP World Tour over Rory McIlroy with his win. A big reason is course design. Delhi Golf Club took bomb and gouge out of play. All the modern analytics saying “Hit it far!” got thrown out the window. And Rory isn’t going to be the favorite without his driver. Watch this collection of tee shots. It’s all controlled, flighted irons. This was the winning play in Delhi.

You could change who the top ten players are in the world just by course design. But that won’t happen. Modern courses setups are mostly set up to just bang driver. Scottie the exception. He could be even better possibly with tighter course setups.

84 years old walk six days a week, playing at 5700 yards. Riders cannot keep up to my group of walkers. Especially on a cart path only day. Plus we are in much better shape.
