What you also need to know - and I have been writing on for some months - is that Transnet is re-allocating the tonnage per client for the export line
All contracts and allocation end December 31st 2026 and the new dispensation starts January 1st 2027
Announcement should be made mid-December (but) I'd wager there may be challenges as the big boys (Kumba, Assore, ARM etc) potentially see their allocation trimmed to meet the new mandate of assisting small-to-mid scale BEE iron ore miners - like $JSAFT Afrimat as one example (they have a current export allocation of 870,000 tons but its never been fully utilised as Transnet has under-performed for years on that line)
Should #AFT gain a sizeable increase in allocation - I've written it (could) rise from 870kt to @1.5mKt ... they #AFT no longer have to sell at below spot cost (R1,500 a ton) to the failing Arcelor Mittal SA and can export their higher quality iron ore banking greater revenue & profits
Currently #AFT can't export so the only domestic buyer is AMSA & they pay way below market. Granted , #AFT still make an nice markin but its well below global prices
Granted, on any higher export allocation #AFT will still have to pay a % marketing fee to Kumba + elevated shipping costs BUT better to get nearer spot R1,500 a ton than sell to AMSA at @R800 a ton
That's one of the silver bullets that (could) be a win for #AFT alongside selling cement and using proceeds to reduce the R1,6bn (50% gearing) debt
Results and the narrative tomorrow could be interesting to listen too
Transnet is fixing and improving the rail between Sishen and Saldanha - if iron ore prices can recover .....maybe then the chart of kumba will start to look better....
