Looking back at life on the railways in general. There was an incredible variety of workers and each contributed to the running of the railways.

One of the last of Johnson’s useful ‘No. 1 Class’, a class of 2-4-0s built for mixed-traffic duties. No. 28 is being coaled at Norwich shed on 15/4/1911; at this point, it had a year before withdrawal. The brick-built coal stage was to the south of the engine shed, which was fed by an incline from the opposite side. Coal was unloaded from wagons by hand into small iron tubs with end doors; the wheels were of unflanged iron. Several tubs here are ready, and one is being manhandled so that coal can be dumped into the tender. The loading stage was always available, with light supplied by a double row of gas lamps.

On 17 June 1949 an Up goods passes St Fagans signal box west led by Modified Hall class 4-6-0 No 6948 Holbrooke Hall. Well into the second year of nationalisation, the loco retains GWR livery, with its number on the buffer beam and has yet to receive a BR smoke box numberplate.

LNER 2859 B-17/5 on the then-new 70 ft turntable at Norwich Thorpe adjacent to the station. The loco had just been rebuilt; it had been streamlined for the new East Anglian service. Apart from the streamlining, which added 3.25 tons, 2859 and 2870 differed from the standard B-17s, having chime whistles, longer buffers, an extra lubricator, group standard tenders fitted with streamlined fairings, and an additional ventilator fitted to the cab roof.

A photo looking northwest from Temple Mills Central signal box, circa 1913. With permanent way staff engaged in some maintenance in the foreground. This is the 17 'Cambridge Yard' sorting sidings portion of the very large Temple Mills Yard, Stratford. The unidentified Y14 0-6-0 locomotive is standing on No.5 road, whilst the 0-6-0T shunt pilot is on a rake of wagons in No.9 road. On the far left can be seen the brake van of a train standing on the Down Goods. In the foreground there is a predominance of railway company-owned wagons, principally Midland and GER high-sided opens with a selection of GER covered goods centre. The Up and Down Mains are out of sight to the right.
