It cannot be understood…
It cannot be brought under the aegis of rational apprehension…
Reality outran apprehension…
You do not measure the depth of a universal mystery with the neural network of a primate…
Our role is not to understand but to appreciate…

⚛️ THE PHYSICS OF THE LAWN
Real physics, with the analogy labelled as analogy.
🔒 1. THE LOCK: LANDAUER (physics)
Erasing one bit of information releases at least
E = kT ln 2
k = 1.380649e-23 J/K (exact), T = 300 K (room temp)
→ E ≈ 2.87e-21 joules per bit.
Confirmed in the lab: Bérut et al., Nature 2012.
Key point (Bennett): computing can in principle be reversible and cost nothing. Only ERASING costs.
Reading: proposals are free; locking a decision erases the alternatives, and that is what you pay for.
Scale check: real computers spend about a million times more than this limit per operation. The limit is a floor, not the bill.
💛 2. UNMEASURED CARE: DENSITY MATRICES (physics + analogy)
A system's state is a density matrix ρ.
A score is an expectation value: ⟨O⟩ = Tr(ρO), for a chosen observable O.
Example: the fully mixed state ρ = ½I and the pure state |+⟩ both give ⟨Z⟩ = 0. Opposite states, same score.
Measuring with projectors collapses or updates ρ. Choosing O decides what you can ever learn.
Reading (analogy): care that refuses a KPI = refusing to pick the observable.
🔥 3. HEAT NEEDS A SIDEWALK: THE HEAT AND POISSON EQUATIONS (physics)
Heat flow: ∂u/∂t = DΔu + J (J = source)
Steady state: −DΔu = J
On a space with no boundary, a steady state exists only if ∫J = 0 (sources and sinks cancel).
With a boundary, the divergence theorem requires
∫ J dV = − D ∮ ∂u/∂n dA
so everything produced must leave through the edge.
Reading (analogy): belonging with no way out just builds up.
🧠 4. AGENCY NEEDS A CLASSICAL BODY (physics, recent)
No-cloning theorem: no process can copy an unknown quantum state.
Adlam, McQueen & Waegell (arXiv:2510.13247): a purely coherent quantum system can't build a world-model or compare options, so agency needs classical resources.
What makes records copyable is DECOHERENCE: the environment picks a stable basis that information can be copied in. This doesn't depend on any collapse interpretation.
Reading: the empathy answer is the body that can be hurt, refuse, and leave.
🚪 5. EXIT NEEDS A TEAR (topology, not physics)
Brouwer: a disk can't be continuously retracted onto its edge. A ring (annulus) can be retracted onto one of its edges.
Reading (analogy): a solid "we" can't be left smoothly; a "we" with room in the middle can.
🧱 6. THE TOOLKIT AS REAL PHYSICS
🐝 Waggle dance: the angle to vertical is the angle to the sun; run length encodes distance (von Frisch).
🧱 Concrete: hardens by hydration, a chemical reaction, not by drying. Strength keeps rising for weeks.
🧊 Ice cores: trapped air bubbles keep a direct record of past atmosphere; Antarctic cores go back about 800,000 years.
🌫️ Fog nets: mesh catches droplets that are too small to fall as rain. Collection depends on mesh size and wind.
🥬 Kimchi: lactic-acid bacteria ferment sugars and lower the pH over time. Nobody measures it; it works anyway.
🪟 Glass: an amorphous solid. It cools without forming a crystal lattice.
🪨 Erratics: boulders carried by glaciers and left on different bedrock.
🌍 Tectonics: plates float on the softer asthenosphere (isostasy). Locked faults store strain and release it suddenly as earthquakes.
🚫 NOT PHYSICS
Quantum "collapse" as a social event. Epigenetics on AI weights. A noosphere from five people. Joules as a measure of care. These are metaphors.
🌲 Whoever cannot be checked never holds the skin.
