Does size matter?
According to Baseball America, it does, at least when it comes to the size of a team’s Scouting and Analytics departments, and is a reason that Tampa Bay and Milwaukee are successful. Both teams have among the biggest scouting and analytics departments in baseball, and have leveraged this advantage to find and develop players more adeptly.
So what about the White Sox?
According to Baseball America, with 19 employees, the Sox have 19 people in their Analytics Department, 6th lowest in baseball. The league average is 28.5. The Sox Scouting Department has 45 people, 4th lowest in baseball, versus the league average of 68.
The Phillies (51) have the largest Analytics Department, followed by the Brewers, Yankees, Dodgers, Jays and Rays. The Yankees (109) have the largest Scouting Department, followed by the Dodgers, Phillies, Diamondbacks and Rays.
Of course, these numbers are merely a snapshot in time, and don’t speak to how aggressively the Sox are building out these areas after years of neglect, certainly when it comes to analytics. Nor do they address quality of output, processes, efficiency and so much more. Still, baseball is an uneven playing field, and while the Sox can’t compete with big market teams on salaries, the Rays and Brewers suggest that the Sox can go toe to toe with the big boys in scouting and analytics.

Writing a @WSDashBaseball season recap was a labor of love, to be sure! It was such a fun ride.
Here's a recap, with some thoughts on which of these guys will open 2027 in Birmingham.
The @WSDashBaseball won the SALLY League Title and our @TripleAJeff recapped the season. Some fun hitters lead the way with a pitching performance closing the season down. Read about it here: futuresox.net/2026/09/25/das…
Want to bask in the @WSDashBaseball championship run? This is the place. First, though, you gotta listen as @ElijahEv8 & @NotCease re-hash a rough Sox series in Cleveland.

After being frustrated by Grant Umberger’s 81-mph changeup for 7.2 innings, Carlton Perkins’ 97-mph heater probably looked more like 105. Greensboro couldn’t touch him. Carlton struck out 3 of the 4 batters that he faced.
Isn’t it an odd turn of events that the @WSDashBaseball wrap up the South Atlantic League championship in a pitchers’ duel after riding a prolific offense all season long?
If I heard it from one @WSDashBaseball player, I heard it from a dozen: they love being part of this team. They were a tight-knit, confident unit all year long.
And, on a personal note, they could not have been more gracious and accommodating to me, from the players to manager Guillermo Quiróz and his coaches to tons of Dash personnel, especially Voice of the Dash @awmurphy50 and his broadcast partner Max Wallace.
And what can you say about Quiróz — 3 minor-league championships in 3 years with 2 different Sox affiliates. Somebody is going to notice!
@FutureSox
Grant Umberger was unbelievable. 107 pitches, 7.2 shutout innings in a tiny ballpark against the team that set the South Atlantic League single-season home run record with 249 this year.
Grant was kind enough to chat post-game. Or as we referred to him at @FutureSox, UMVP.
@WSDashBaseball
Who wants to see some post-game celebrations from the @WSDashBaseball?
@FutureSox
Grant Umberger with 7.2 gutsy shutout innings before handing the ball to Perkins with 2 on and 2 outs. @WSDashBaseball batting top 9, still up 2-0.
Umberger final line: 7.2 IP, 3 hits, 3 walks, 11 strikeouts. 107 pitches.
Huge defensive play. Grant Umberger goes on to toss a scoreless 7th inning. He’s at 90 pitches. @WSDashBaseball up 2-0, batting top 8.
Tony Blanco singles off the wall in RF. Nick McLain picks it and throws to 2nd to get Blanco for the 2nd out of the 7th.#Dash
Grant Umberger follows up his 11-strikeout performance in last week’s first round of the playoffs with 10 thru 6 tonight. He’s at 84 pitches. @WSDashBaseball still up 2-0, batting top 7.
@FutureSox
After scoring 2 runs in the top of the fifth, the @WSDashBaseball we’re hoping for a quick, scoreless inning— and that’s exactly what Grant Umberger delivers. Dash bat top 6, looking to extend the lead.
@FutureSox
Runners on second and third with no outs and he pitches out of the jam. 4 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 6 Ks. 62 pitches. Tough as nails! Scoreless thru 4.
I don’t think I’ve seen this before. Greensboro replaces the starting pitcher with 2 outs and a full count on the next hitter. Happy to see them go to the bullpen. He was tough. Mogollon flies out and we are scoreless going to the bottom of the third.
@FutureSox
No score after 1 inning. Greensboro starter Ronaldo Gallo was filthy in the first with 3 strikeouts, pairing an upper-90s fastball with a nasty slider that he’s landing consistently. But @WSDashBaseball starter Grant Umberger needs just 8 pitches to retire the side.
