The Muslim community is steadily strengthening its presence and political representation in American politics. Muslims are no longer limited to just voting; they are contesting and winning elections, holding positions of power, and making their voices heard in policymaking.

The demolitions of Muslim homes and mosques in Assam raise serious questions about constitutional rights, religious freedom, equality before the law and the right to shelter.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma must answer: Where is the due process? Where are the safeguards for families? Where is the accountability when people lose their homes and places of worship?
No government has the authority to bypass the law. If any structure is alleged to be illegal, the law must take its course through fair procedures, proper notice and judicial safeguards — not arbitrary action or collective punishment.

A democracy is only as strong as its commitment to equal representation and justice.
Muslims should not just be voters; they deserve an equal voice in shaping the nation's future.
Political representation is not a favour; it is a democratic right.

Can India's democracy provide equal political representation to its 200 million Muslims?
Jailed JNU scholar Sharjeel Imam has once again sparked a debate over India's democracy, secularism and the political representation of its Muslim community.
India is home to approximately 200 million Muslims, making it one of the world's largest Muslim populations. Yet, an important question remains: Does such a large community receive adequate representation in Parliament, state legislatures and the institutions where decisions are made?
In an interview with The Quint, Sharjeel Imam questioned India's secular identity and electoral system. His arguments have reignited discussions among academics and activists. He argues that the First-Past-The-Post electoral system, without adequate safeguards, could lead to the permanent political marginalisation of Muslims.
Referring to the concerns raised by Allama Iqbal and Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Imam argues that the political marginalisation of Muslims was a concern even before Partition, when Muslims were increasingly portrayed as an unwanted minority in the emerging nationalist discourse.
His prolonged judicial detention has also raised serious questions about justice, bail and pre-trial imprisonment in India. Sharjeel Imam, Umar Khalid and several other Muslim students and activists have been in custody in connection with the alleged conspiracy behind the 2020 Delhi riots. The allegations remain subject to judicial proceedings.
The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), passed in 2019, is another important part of this debate. It provides an accelerated route to citizenship for eligible non-Muslim migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, while excluding Muslims from its provisions. This exclusion has prompted questions about India's secular principles.
But the biggest question remains the political representation of Muslims.
Does democracy simply mean casting a vote during elections? Is a community's role limited to mobilising crowds, raising slogans and providing electoral support to political parties? Or should it also have an equal place in Parliament, legislatures and decision-making institutions?
The strength of Indian democracy should not be measured merely by the conduct of elections, but also by how effectively minorities are represented and included in the country's political and institutional framework.
