Roll call for Freedom. Join the 30 October Coalition to remember and honor political prisoners around the world. Thank you @freedomhouse for standing with political prisoners and keeping their fight alive. We are grateful.
Behind every political prisoner is a story that deserves to be heard.
On October 30, join Freedom House and the October 30 Coalition, in Washington, DC at the Lincoln Memorial for a public ceremony marking the International Day of Political Prisoners.
Together, we'll read the names of those unjustly imprisoned around the world, honor those who have regained their freedom, and remember those who died in detention.

Political imprisonment is meant to frighten everyone, to tell families, newsrooms & villages, STAY SILENT. That's why Yaoundé jails me, Penn Terence, Sisiku & thousands of Southern Cameroonians. Oct 30 started in a Soviet gulag in 1974 with a hunger strike. Today we carry it.

“It's difficult to get recent news, but really, very few foreign journalists can enter Eritrea. And in Eritrea, there are very few journalists because, literally … the entire independent press disappeared 25 years ago.”
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the silencing of independent Eritrean media and the arrest of some of the world’s longest-detained journalists, who CPJ is honoring at our 2026 International Press Freedom Awards.

No one should be imprisoned for speaking freely, standing up for their beliefs, or exercising their fundamental rights.
Ahead of the International Day of Political Prisoners on October 30, Freedom House joins the October 30 Coalition in calling for sustained international action to secure the release of political prisoners worldwide and hold their persecutors accountable.
We must continue to raise their names, stand with their families, and demand their freedom.

Cuba has over 1,300 political prisoners. They are students, artists, journalists, activists, and ordinary citizens exercising fundamental freedoms. The international community must continue to stand with them and call for their immediate and unconditional release. #FreeThemAll
Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, a former political prisoner from Cuba, told me that hearing America speak up for his freedom while behind bars gave him hope.
Today, his voice was heard at the UN. I pray his courage and powerful testimony reach those still imprisoned in Cuba and give them that same hope.

Praise says officers at CPS sweet-talked her to join PLU or risk disappearing for good like Sam Mugumya and other political prisoners if she continues to appear on their radar.
This happened as she was recording a statement in the OC CID’s office at Kampala CPS.

Today at @USUN alongside USAmbUN, Freedom House's CEO @jamiemfly was honored to have the opportunity to highlight the decades of repression in Cuba. The world must not overlook the regime's denial of fundamental freedoms. Cubans deserve a voice in their country's future.
Following today's Cuba Libre panel at the UN, @USAmbUN joined @FreedomHouse CEO @JamieFly at the Foreign Press Center to brief international media on U.S. priorities regarding Cuba and human rights at the UN.
They want us to hate each other, don't let them win.
We must all stand up against dictatorship. The world is fast becoming a dangerous place for all mankind. The fight is for all. The future is ours. Stand up people.

#Ethiopia 🇪🇹 Journalist Abay Zewdu is due to appear in court on October 16, after spending more than three years behind bars on terrorism charges that could carry the death penalty if he’s convicted.
Abay, arrested on August 10, 2023, for his reporting on the conflict in Ethiopia’s Amhara region, remains in prolonged pretrial detention. The court has yet to determine whether the prosecution has sufficient evidence for his case to proceed.
Recently, Abay refused pressure to sign an apology letter admitting wrongdoing and pledging to stop journalism. He remains behind bars despite his refusal.
CPJ calls on Ethiopian authorities to immediately release Abay and stop criminalizing journalism.

We call for an immediate halt to executions, the release of political prisoners, and accountability for those responsible for repression.
A democratic Iran must abolish the death penalty, a commitment at the heart of Maryam Rajavi’s Ten-Point Plan.
Stand with the Iranian people. Speak for those facing the gallows.
