remember all those who told us right after the Taliban took power again that they had changed and would support womens' education?
Wonderful news!!!
Such wonderful news that Australian engineer Robert Pether has finally been freed from detention in Iraq and allowed to depart the country. Robert spent more than 5 years in several Iraqi prisons and later, on bail in Baghdad, and was subject to grave mistreatment during his initial arrest and interrogation, including allegations of torture. Robert suffers from a number of health conditions including suspected melanoma and will finally be able to access the specialist medical treatment he so desperately needs.
I am thrilled for Robert's wife Desree and the couple's children, who have campaigned tirelessly for Robert's freedom and who have suffered alongside him throughout this ordeal.
I understand that this was a humanitarian gesture on the part of the Iraqi government. While of course it would have been great to see Robert's ordeal resolved sooner, this case is ultimately another success for Australian diplomacy.

October 7 2023 is the most documented and intensely filmed crime of mass murder and atrocious sadism in all of human history. Those who celebrated it on that day, October 8 2023 and the following weeks shocked us all.
Today should only be a sorrowful day. Those who march today of all days in London or elsewhere are not only rejecting and mocking the most elementary decency but celebrating the killing, torture and rape of ordinary people. It is hard to think of anything more degenerate and depraved.
The decision to allow this march today is unconscionable, cowardly and despicable @metpoliceuk @ShabanaMahmood, an abuse and degradation of our values of free speech and assembly, particularly after countless demonstrations that have already taken place. I am afraid it reveals a saddening and alarming void at the moral centre of this government and police that should worry us all.
This is a brilliant, simple, and 100% accurate picture of Myanmar’s economy - from the redoubtable Kelley Currie
What do these two stories about the Min Aung Hlaing regime's gross economic malfeasance have to do with the horrific #HumanRights situation in Myanmar? Lots, as it turns out.
The regime is deeply incompetent at managing the Myanmar economy for growth, just as they are deeply incompetent at every other task that involves governing the country in a way that is not corrupt, self-serving and/or for the benefit of its external partners.
But they are very good at extracting from the economy for their own benefit, and because of Myanmar's abundant natural resources there is plenty to extract. Military-run Myanmar has always been this way: the SitTat military is a parasite that preys upon the human and natural resources of the country in order to keep itself in power--even if this means impoverishing and destroying the rest of the nation it claims it exists to protect. If you can work with the regime in extracting from the country, then you too can prosper. (See, e.g. China)
This self-preservation instinct drives the SitTat to make decisions that are not in the best interests of the people because it can't: managing the economy for broad-based and sustainable growth would require it to loosen control, reduce the endemic rent-seeking and corruption of its patronage networks, divert state resources from weapons and payoffs, and engage in trade that was open to scrutiny and market discipline. So instead of thriving, the economy is mired in out-of-control inflation, and a fiscal situation that is untenable. The whole economy is now a conflict economy because that is the best way for the regime to siphon off the resources it needs to continue to wage war on the Myanmar people. More jet fuel and missiles to blow up markets, schools, health clinics and places of worship.
And what the regime and its allies can't get from controlling natural resources and cross-border trade, the extract from the people through elaborate legal corruption mechanisms.
Need a new ID? That will be 1 million Kyat
Need a birth or marriage certificate? 1 million Kyat
Want to avoid being sent to the front lines as cannon fodder in a war that was begun by one man's egomania? 1 million Kyat and rising (or if you are in Thailand trying to avoid conscription, 30,000 Baht and rising)
Want to open a business? Here is your business partner who will take an onerous percentage of your profits as part of a protection racket where you do all the work and they bleed you to death. (And who are they protecting you from? Themselves, of course!)
And on it goes. For everything. Getting your electricity turned on. Getting the Internet to work. Getting a new apartment. Getting a job. Getting a permit for a car or motorbike. Everything. The state is the mafia and the mafia is the state.
If you're a selfish outside power that just wants to extract from a weak and dependent Myanmar and doesn't care if the Myanmar people suffer, and you're willing and able to use your power and influence to protect your interests in Myanmar, this is a great set up.
But what about the other countries that are hoping to use engagement with the Min Aung Hlaing mafia to manage a domestic political issue or address transnational issues? You should understand that you are the frog and the regime is the scorpion. Whatever good thing you hope will come out of your engagement with them, it's not going to happen. This regime won't deliver on any promise unless doing so helps them to stay in power--that is their only non-negotiable. So your engagement with them will inevitably be helping them to stay in power, at the expense of the people of Myanmar and their future. You're paying the protection racket too.

When Malaysians were demanding that something be done about Rohingya refugees, did that “something” include rolling out a red carpet for a mass murderer of their fellow Muslims?
PM Ibrahim will likely live to regret sacrificing his reputation & integrity in this way. Min Aung Hlaing won’t solve his party’s domestic political problems but this visit will stain Pak Anwar as an enabler of this monster.

#Selangor : Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing arrived in Malaysia today for a two-day official visit, with the repatriation of Myanmar nationals in Malaysia among key issues to be discussed with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Min and his delegation arrived at BRC KLIA at 12.30 pm on a special flight and were accorded a static guard of honour by the First Battalion of the Royal Ranger Regiment led by Capt Muhammad Ikhwan Adlan Jamaludin.

I can't believe it's only been 3 years since October 7. Thinking in particular of the innocent children and young people who so devastatingly lost their lives on this terrible day. So much death, pain and suffering could have been prevented on both sides of the border fence had Hamas taken their billions in cash payments and set about building a better future for the Gazan people. So much could have been prevented had Netanyahu heeded the warnings he was given in the lead up to October 7. The region so desperately needs peace. Is it too much to hope that, by the time we reach the 4th anniversary of this tragedy, both Hamas and Netanyahu will be gone?

The cancellation of "Cancelled" - says it all. It's happening everywhere. "Now is not a good time" is, I'm told, the usual line when the weasels attempt to rationalise their denial and erasure of Jewish culture and creativity.
Had a great meeting today with Myanmar’s NUG Finance Minister, U Tin Tun Naing. A man of great courage, integrity and a genuine visionary for Myanmar’s future economy.

Stating facts. The Cold War-era UN's purpose was to prevent open war between the US and the USSR. Based on time spent, the post-Cold War UN's purpose is to condemn Israel while ignoring or covering up the crimes and terror of Islamist states, groups, and other dictatorships.
Argentina's President @JMilei, addressing the UNGA:
“The alleged defenders of human rights have sheltered bloodthirsty dictatorships and regimes that stone women in the streets.
They have systematically voted against Israel while remaining silent in the face of Islamic terrorism and the genocide of Christians in Africa.”

The list of real war criminals exploiting the UN platform to brag about their accomplishments is not limited to the Iranian president. And to cover their genocidal records they are more than happy to talk about Israel.
NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani branded Israeli PM Netanyahu a "war criminal" and called him an "architect" of "genocide" — demanding his arrest if he set foot in New York.
But when Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in the city this week for the UN General Assembly, Mamdani went largely silent. No calls for arrest. No fiery rhetoric. No statements labeling the leader of a regime the U.S. government has accused of assassination plots on American soil.
Iranian-born journalist Masih Alinejad, who survived a kidnapping attempt near her Brooklyn home orchestrated by Tehran, fired back: "If you have the courage to talk about arresting those responsible for crimes against humanity, start with the man sleeping five miles from your office." Sen. Tom Cotton put it bluntly: "The one person he cites is the leader of the Jewish State of Israel."

When Iran suppressed the Women, Life, Freedom uprising in early 2023, the regime killed at least 551 people, and arrested nearly 19,000 protestors. They also intentionally blinded hundreds of women.
This week, Iranian officials are in New York City at the United Nations. They are the men seeking to perpetuate the same regime that blinded its citizens and have still not been brought to justice.

Allow me to translate: a totalitarian regime that right now is arbitrarily detaining literally hundreds of Americans and other citizens of free nations really wants to welcome 100,000 American college students to propagandize them or use them as leverage. What a terrible idea.
